James D’Arcy

James D'Arcy, born Simon Richard D'Arcy, is an English actor, screenwriter, and film director. He is widely recognized for playing Edwin Jarvis, the loyal butler to Howard Stark, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe television series Agent Carter and the feature film Avengers: Endgame. He is also well known for his portrayal of murder suspect Lee Ashworth in the drama Broadchurch, as well as his roles in Christopher Nolan's historical films Dunkirk and Oppenheimer. In addition to his work on camera, he wrote and directed the feature film Made in Italy.

Born on 24 August 1975 in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, D'Arcy experienced the death of his father, Richard, during his childhood. He was brought up alongside his sister Charlotte in Fulham, London, by their mother Caroline, who worked as a nurse. After finishing his studies at Christ's Hospital in West Sussex in 1991, D'Arcy spent a year working in the drama department of a school in Perth, Australia. Upon returning to London, he enrolled in a three-year program at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Acting in 1995.

D'Arcy began his professional acting career in 1996 with minor television appearances on Silent Witness and Dalziel and Pascoe. The following year, he starred in television films such as The Ice House, Bribery and Corruption, and The Canterville Ghost, while also appearing in the miniseries The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling and the film Wilde. Before the end of the decade, he took part in the World War I feature drama The Trench and made a minor appearance in the comedy Guest House Paradiso.

During the early 2000s, D'Arcy secured prominent roles in projects like the miniseries Rebel Heart, The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, Revelation, and P.O.W., as well as playing a young Sherlock Holmes in the television movie Sherlock: Case of Evil. He gained increased international visibility as First Lieutenant Tom Pullings in Peter Weir's 2003 film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. He subsequently performed in horror features including Exorcist: The Beginning, An American Haunting, and Rise: Blood Hunter, while continuing his television career with appearances in adaptations of Agatha Christie works, Ancient Rome: The Rise and Fall of an Empire, and Mansfield Park.

In the 2010s and beyond, D'Arcy expanded his resume with roles such as King Edward VIII in W.E., multiple characters in Cloud Atlas, and Anthony Perkins in Hitchcock. Between 2015 and 2016, he starred as Edwin Jarvis in Agent Carter, later becoming the first performer to transition a character originating from an MCU television series into an MCU movie when he appeared in Avengers: Endgame. He also featured in films such as Let's Be Cops, Survivor, Jupiter Ascending, The Snowman, Dunkirk, and Oppenheimer, as well as the television series Homeland. He made his directorial debut with the 2020 film Made in Italy, which he also wrote, and later appeared in the 2024 music video for Lil Dicky's track HAHAHA.
