Bae Doona

Bae Doona is a South Korean actress and photographer born on October 11, 1979, in the Jongno District of Seoul. Growing up, she frequently accompanied her mother, stage actress Kim Hwa-young, to theater rehearsals, which initially gave her the impression that acting demanded exceptional talent. While studying at Hanyang University in 1998, she was discovered by a modeling agency and began catalog modeling. She transitioned to acting the following year, debuting in the television drama School and appearing as Park Eun-suh in the horror feature The Ring Virus.

Bae achieved a major career turn in 2000 when director Bong Joon-ho cast her in Barking Dogs Never Bite, a role that inspired her to pursue a full-time acting career. That same year, she appeared in Plum Blossom and began working more frequently in television. She went on to star in Jeong Jae-eun's 2001 film Take Care of My Cat and Park Chan-wook's 2002 thriller Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance. Following the 2003 releases of Tube and Spring Bears Love, Bae took a hiatus from feature films to focus on photography, sharing her work online and publishing photo-essay books while continuing television work in shows such as Country Princess and Rosemary, as well as appearing in the 2004 stage play Sunday Seoul.

In 2005, Bae expanded internationally by starring as an exchange student in the Japanese film Linda Linda Linda. She reunited with Bong Joon-ho for the 2006 blockbuster hit The Host, undergoing months of archery training to play Park Nam-joo. She earned widespread critical recognition for her performance in Hirokazu Kore-eda's 2009 Japanese film Air Doll. Bae made her English-language Hollywood debut playing Sonmi~451 and other roles in the 2012 sci-fi film Cloud Atlas, co-directed by the Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer. This led to further collaborations with the Wachowskis, including the 2015 movie Jupiter Ascending and the Netflix sci-fi series Sense8.

Bae continued to take on diverse roles in South Korea and abroad. She trained to play left-handed table tennis player Ri Bun-hui in the 2012 film As One. In 2014, she starred without pay as a police officer in July Jung's A Girl at My Door, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and won her the Best Actress award at the Asian Film Awards. Her film filmography further includes the survival drama Tunnel, the short biographical web film Red Carpet Dream directed by her brother Bae Doo-han, the crime drama The Drug King, the 2019 French romantic comedy Je Suis La, and the 2022 acclaimed features Broker and Next Sohee.

On television, Bae earned widespread recognition for starring as Lieutenant Han Yeo-jin in the crime thriller Stranger, as well as lead roles in the period zombie series Kingdom, the sci-fi drama The Silent Sea, and the 2024 drama Family Matters. In 2018, she joined the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Bae signed with Goodman Story Entertainment in 2023, starred in Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon films, and was selected as an international jury member for the 76th Berlin International Film Festival in 2026.
