Shin Ha-kyun

Shin Ha-kyun is a South Korean actor born on May 30, 1974. He originally trained as a theater performer at the Seoul Institute of the Arts, appearing in numerous stage productions directed by Jang Jin. He made his feature screen debut in Jang's directorial launch, The Happenings, and subsequently performed in almost every movie directed by Jang. Recognizing his capabilities, director Kim Jee-woon cast him in minor roles within the film The Foul King and the internet release Coming Out.

Shin achieved mainstream stardom in late 2000 for his portrayal of a young North Korean soldier in Park Chan-wook's hit film Joint Security Area. This breakthrough earned him a substantial fan following, which contributed to the commercial success of his subsequent film Guns & Talks alongside Won Bin. In 2002, he starred as a deaf man driven to kidnap a child in Park's Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, followed by his role in Save the Green Planet! in 2003 playing a mentally troubled man who fears an alien invasion.

Throughout the 2000s, Shin built a versatile film career with roles across various genres. He performed in Korean War-focused dramas such as Welcome to Dongmakgol and The Front Line. His filmography also included portraying a developmentally disabled man in My Brother, a rural postal worker in A Letter From Mars, a suspect in Murder, Take One, an eccentric hitman in No Mercy for the Rude, an artist in The Devil's Game, a sickly husband in Thirst, an officer in Foxy Festival, and a music instructor in Cafe Noir. Additionally, he transitioned into television, debuting in the 2003 series Good Person and later appearing in Golden House in 2010.

In 2011, Shin received widespread acclaim for playing an ambitious neurosurgeon in the medical television drama Brain, earning the Grand Prize (Daesang) at the KBS Drama Awards. He followed this success with the 2013 romantic political series All About My Romance and the action film Running Man. In 2014, he played a man in his seventies who magically becomes thirty in Mr. Back, and an antagonist in Big Match. He then headlined his first historical feature, Empire of Lust, playing a Joseon admiral in 2015.

Shin continued taking on diverse television and film projects, playing a negotiator in Pied Piper in 2016, and appearing in comedies such as Detour, Room No.7, and What a Man Wants. He also held roles in action film The Villainess, comedy drama Inseparable Bros, and the box-office success Extreme Job. In television, he led the British crime drama remake Less Than Evil, followed by the medical drama Soul Mechanic in 2020.

His performance as an eccentric police officer in the 2021 thriller series Beyond Evil won him the Best Actor award at the 57th Baeksang Arts Awards. His subsequent credits include the thriller Anchor and the sitcom Unicorn in 2022, as well as the legal series The Auditors in 2024. In his personal life, he was in a relationship with Kim Go-eun between 2016 and 2017, and his niece, Park Eun-young, formerly belonged to the idol group Brave Girls.
