Kim Hye-soo

Kim Hye-soo is a South Korean actress who rose to prominence as a major teen star during the 1980s and 1990s. Renowned for portraying independent, self-reliant, and sophisticated women, she has built an extensive body of work across both film and television. Her portrayal of Madam Jeong in the 2006 crime feature Tazza: The High Rollers stands among her most commercially successful projects, cementing her status as a leading figure in Korean cinema.

Born on September 5, 1970, in the Dongnae District of Busan, Kim is the second of five children. Due to her father's employment, she transferred to an elementary school in Seoul during her third-grade year. As a child, she belonged to the national children's Taekwondo demonstration team and presented a bouquet to International Olympic Committee President Juan Antonio Samaranch in April 1982. She later pursued higher education, earning a bachelor's degree in theater and film from Dongguk University.

Kim began her career in 1985 by appearing in an advertisement for Nestlé Milo and featuring in Cho Yong-pil's music video for Empty In The Air. She made her feature film debut as a high school student in the 1986 movie Ggambo, a role that earned her the Best New Actress honor at the 23rd Baeksang Arts Awards. Throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, she secured lead roles in several television series, including Samogok, Sun Shim-yi, Senoya, and Lost Love.

In 1993, Kim starred in the romantic drama First Love, becoming the youngest recipient of the Blue Dragon Film Award for Best Leading Actress. Frequently recognized as a major cultural figure of the era alongside contemporaries such as Kim Hee-sun and Shim Eun-ha, she shifted her focus toward cinema during the 2000s. She took on diverse roles in productions like Kick the Moon, Hypnotized, The Red Shoes, and Tazza: The High Rollers, the latter securing her third Blue Dragon Film Award for Best Actress. Her screen career continued with major roles in the high-grossing heist film The Thieves, the noir drama Coin Locker Girl, and the comedy Familyhood.

Alongside her film career, Kim has maintained a prominent presence on television. Her notable small-screen projects include Partner, Did We Really Love?, Royal Story: Jang Hui-bin, and The Queen of Office. She achieved widespread acclaim for her performance in the 2016 procedural drama Signal, and later headlined Hyena, the international hit Juvenile Justice, and the historical series Under the Queen's Umbrella. In 2023, she starred in the action feature Smuggling, which emerged as the highest-grossing domestic summer film of that year.

Beyond acting, Kim has regularly hosted award ceremonies and current affairs programs, such as the broadcast show W in 2010. She is also active in humanitarian efforts, frequently donating to disaster relief organizations, art initiatives, and support funds for crime victims.
