While in middle school, he participated in an actor selection at SBS TV station. He also trained briefly as an idol group member before leaving his agency to pursue acting. He later studied Professional Motion Pictures and Art at Konkuk University, graduating in 2016.
Lee made his official acting debut in 2010 with the television series Prosecutor Princess and the horror film Ghost. He gained wider recognition through supporting roles in the drama Secret Garden, the sitcom High Kick Season 3, and the 2012 film R2B: Return to Base. His breakout role arrived in the teen drama School 2013, which earned him the Best New Actor award at the 2012 KBS Drama Awards. Following this success, he starred in the drama I Can Hear Your Voice, receiving an Excellence Award at the Korea Drama Awards, as well as the films No Breathing and The Face Reader.
In 2014, Lee starred in the film Hot Young Bloods and the medical drama Doctor Stranger. He followed this with the drama Pinocchio, winning the Male Top Excellence Award at the 8th Korea Drama Awards and becoming the youngest recipient of the Best Actor award at the 27th Grimae Awards. During this period, he embarked on an Asia fan-meeting tour, released the photobook 2014–2015 Asia Tour Story ~With~, was cast in the Chinese drama Jade Lovers, and unveiled his wax figure at Madame Tussauds Hong Kong.
Lee signed with YG Entertainment in 2016 and starred in the fantasy thriller W, winning the Grand Prize (Daesang) at the MBC Drama Awards. He also appeared in the promotional web drama 7 First Kisses. In 2017, he played a villain in the film VIP, starred in While You Were Sleeping, and was appointed Goodwill Ambassador for Korean tourism. In 2018, he appeared in The Hymn of Death and established his own agency, A-man Project. He subsequently starred in the 2019 romantic comedy drama Romance Is a Bonus Book.
Lee enlisted for mandatory military service as a public service officer on 8 March 2019, having been deemed unfit for active duty due to an anterior cruciate ligament tear from a teenage car accident. After his discharge on 2 January 2021, he made a cameo appearance in The Witch : Part 2. The Other One, followed by roles in the film Decibel and the 2022 television series Big Mouth. Outside of acting, Lee owned the dining cafe 89Mansion until its closure in 2020 and donated 100 million won to the Hope Bridge Disaster Relief Association in 2022 to assist wildfire victims.
