Seo was born on October 23, 1987, in Ulsan, South Korea, where he grew up with his parents and younger sister. His family experienced relative poverty, with his mother working as a recyclables collector and his father as a welder. In school, Seo trained in ssireum wrestling, boxing, and mixed martial arts, and earned a 2nd dan in Hapkido. Inspired by rock musician Kim Jung-min, he decided to become a singer at age ten. At age 20, he moved to Seoul alone to pursue music despite his father's objections. While studying Applied Music at Daebul University, he faced audition rejections and struggled with bulimia. He later continued his education at Kyung Hee Cyber University, Dongguk University, and Baekseok University.
In 2009, Seo won Mnet's Superstar K and released his debut extended play, Calling. He signed with Jellyfish Entertainment and earned the Male Newcomer of the Year Award at the Cyworld Digital Music Awards. In 2010, he released his first single album, Just Beginning, followed by the repackage My Baby U, and subsequently released singles such as Broken and Shake It Up in 2011.
Seo made his onscreen acting debut in 2012 in the drama Love Rain following his performance in the musical Gwanghwamun Love Song. Later that year, he landed his first lead role in Reply 1997. His performance received critical acclaim, and his soundtrack duet "All For You" topped digital charts and won Best OST at the Melon Music Awards and Mnet Asian Music Awards. He also appeared in the drama The Sons and signed with Japanese agency Irving Entertainment.
Between 2013 and 2015, Seo joined the variety show I Live Alone and made his Japanese music debut with the single Fly Away and album Everlasting, winning an award at the Japan Gold Disc Awards. His acting projects included the film No Breathing, the series Master's Sun, High School King of Savvy, The King's Face, and Hello Monster, alongside appearances on Law of the Jungle.
In 2016, Seo starred in Squad 38 and Shopping King Louie, winning an Excellence Award at the MBC Drama Awards. After signing with BS Company in 2017, he starred in The Smile Has Left Your Eyes in 2018. He returned to television in Doom at Your Service and film in Pipeline in 2021.
Seo signed with AER Music in late 2021 and released the single album Love&Love in 2022. He subsequently starred in Café Minamdang, Project Wolf Hunting, Death's Game, Boyfriend on Demand, and See You at Work Tomorrow!. In 2017, after enlisting for mandatory military service, Seo was granted a Grade 5 health exemption following a medical diagnosis of osteochondritis dissecans.
