Hwang Jung-min

Hwang Jung-min is a South Korean actor born on September 1, 1970. Recognized as one of South Korea's highest-grossing screen performers, he became the second actor to achieve membership in Chungmuro's "100 Million Viewer Club." After launching his career in musical theatre, he transitioned to film and gained widespread recognition as a romantic lead in the 2005 drama You Are My Sunshine.

Hwang debuted on stage in 1995 with the musical production Line 1, going on to perform in Daehangno productions such as Cats and Jesus Christ Superstar. Despite facing initial difficulty securing film roles due to perceptions about his appearance, he made his cinematic breakthrough as a drum player in the 2001 sleeper hit Waikiki Brothers. He followed this success with key performances in feature films such as Road Movie, A Good Lawyer's Wife, Heaven's Soldiers, and A Bittersweet Life.

His mainstream popularity was cemented by his award-winning portrayal of a naive farmer in You Are My Sunshine (2005). Accepting the Best Actor honor at the Blue Dragon Film Awards for the role, he delivered a noted acceptance speech likening his performance to adding a spoon to an already set table. During this era, he expanded his repertoire with appearances in Black House, Happiness, A Man Who Was Superman, and Private Eye, grounding his craft in script-focused preparation, emotional sincerity, and maintaining objectivity.

In 2008, Hwang returned to stage acting with Nine, later performing in productions like Man of La Mancha. He made his television acting debut in the 2009 series The Accidental Couple, prepared for a blind role in the 2010 period film Blades of Blood by studying at specialized schools, and starred in titles such as The Unjust, Moby Dick, and the hit comedy Dancing Queen (2012). He also made his directorial debut in late 2012 by directing and starring in the musical Assassins.

Throughout the 2010s, Hwang anchored several major box-office successes. He earned praise for his role in the 2013 noir New World, completed his own stunts for Fists of Legend, and led the 2014 historical drama Ode to My Father, which became the second highest-grossing film in South Korean history. His string of hits continued with Veteran (2015)—the third highest-grossing film in national cinema history—alongside The Himalayas, A Violent Prosecutor, The Wailing, Asura: The City of Madness, The Battleship Island, and the 2018 spy drama The Spy Gone North. Gallup Korea named him Film Actor of the Year in 2016.

Hwang continued his prolific screen output with the action feature Deliver Us from Evil (2020), the drama series Hush, the 2021 thriller Hostage: Missing Celebrity, and the 2022 Netflix series Narco-Saints. In 2023, he played a coup leader in the historical political drama 12.12: The Day, which emerged as the highest-grossing domestic release of the year and earned him Best Actor accolades at both the Blue Dragon Film Awards and the 60th Baeksang Arts Awards. His 2024 projects include Mission: Cross and I, the Executioner.

On September 6, 2004, Hwang married musical theatre actress Kim Mi-hye, with whom he has a son named Hwang Sae-hyun. His younger brother, Hwang Sang-jun, works as a composer and music director. A multi-instrumentalist, Hwang plays the drums, cello, and clarinet, incorporating his musical skills into several of his film and television appearances.
