Yoo Yeon-seok

Yoo Yeon-seok, born Ahn Yeon-seok, is a South Korean actor known for his work across television, film, and theater. He made his screen debut in 2003 before briefly pausing his career to complete his education and military service. Following his return to acting, he built a versatile career spanning independent cinema, popular television dramas, and stage productions.

Born on April 11, 1984, in Seoul, South Korea, Yoo is the son of an engineering professor. During his junior year of high school, he decided to pursue acting and moved to the Samseong-dong district of Seoul with his older brother. While taking acting lessons, a friend who joined the costume team for director Park Chan-wook suggested he audition for the 2003 film Oldboy. Due to his physical resemblance to actor Yoo Ji-tae, he was cast to play the younger version of that character.

After his initial debut, Yoo served his mandatory military obligation in the Republic of Korea Air Force and earned a degree in Film Arts from Sejong University. He resumed his career in 2008 using a stage name recommended by his agency, performing in the theatrical productions In The Burning Darkness and Understudy. He returned to television in the medical drama General Hospital 2 and subsequently appeared in supporting roles in Soul, Midnight Hospital, and Tasty Life. His portrayal of an ex-boyfriend searching for his child in the independent feature Re-encounter earned him notable critical praise.

Yoo expanded his mainstream recognition by portraying affluent antagonists in the successful feature films Architecture 101 and A Werewolf Boy. He continued to build his career with roles in the comedy film Born to Sing and the series Gu Family Book, followed by a major breakout role in the late 2013 television drama Reply 1994. In 2014, he starred in the feature films Whistle Blower and The Royal Tailor, and appeared in the travel-reality program Youth Over Flowers.

In 2015, Yoo secured his first network television lead role as a chef and restaurateur on Jeju Island in Warm and Cozy. That year, he also starred in the films Perfect Proposal and The Beauty Inside, and performed in the stage musical Le Passe-Muraille. He followed these projects with roles in the feature films Love, Lies and Mood of the Day, as well as the medical drama series Dr. Romantic in 2016. In 2018, he starred in the romance drama Mr. Sunshine and performed in the musical A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder.

Yoo gained further popularity portraying assistant professor of pediatric surgery Ahn Jeong-won in the series Hospital Playlist across its two seasons from 2020 to 2021. In 2022, he portrayed detective Park Jin-ho in the film Vanishing and played a bank employee in the drama series The Interest of Love. He later reprised his Dr. Romantic role as Kang Dong-joo for a guest appearance in 2023, with additional television credits including When the Phone Rings and Phantom Lawyer.
