Sol Kyung-gu

Sol Kyung-gu is a South Korean actor who gained prominence through his work in both theater and feature films. He is best known for his leading roles in acclaimed movies such as Peppermint Candy, Oasis, Silmido, and the Public Enemy film series. Over his career, he has earned major accolades, including multiple Grand Prizes and Best Actor honors at the Baeksang Arts Awards, Grand Bell Awards, and Blue Dragon Film Awards.

Sol was born on May 1, 1968, in Seocheon, South Chungcheong Province, as the second son in his family alongside a younger sister. After his father, a civil servant, transferred to the Mapo District Office, the family moved to Mapo District in Seoul, where Sol attended Mapo Elementary, Middle, and High Schools. Although his parents preferred that he attend an engineering college, Sol enrolled in the Department of Theater and Film at Hanyang University with early ambitions to become a film director.

While in college, Sol directed plays and engaged in part-time theater work before shifting his focus toward acting. He made his stage debut in 1993 with the Hanyang Theater Company. Following his 1994 graduation, he accumulated extensive stage experience in Daehakro, performing in the hit musical adaptation Subway Line 1 as well as productions of True West, Love Letters, and Mosquito. After appearing in minor television and film roles during the mid-1990s, he made his feature film debut in A Petal (1996).

Sol achieved his career breakthrough playing the lead role of Kim Yeong-ho in Lee Chang-dong's 1999 film Peppermint Candy. His performance received widespread critical acclaim and swept ten New Actor and Best Actor awards. He quickly established himself in Korean cinema with leading roles in Rainbow Trout, Phantom: The Submarine, and I Wish I Had a Wife. In 2002, he starred as a police detective in Public Enemy, played an outcast in Lee Chang-dong's Oasis, and appeared in the box office hit Jail Breakers.

In 2003, Sol starred in Silmido, which became the first South Korean film to record over 10 million admissions. He subsequently gained 20 kilograms and spoke Japanese lines for his title role in Rikidōzan (2004). He returned for two Public Enemy sequels and starred in the 2009 disaster film Haeundae, becoming the first actor with two movies reaching 10 million viewers. During this era, he also starred in Voice of a Murderer, No Mercy, The Tower, Cold Eyes, The Spy: Undercover Operation, and the 2013 drama Hope, winning a Baeksang Arts Award for Best Actor.

Sol's subsequent projects included My Dictator (2014), the war film The Long Way Home (2015), The Merciless (2017), Memoir of a Murderer (2017), Idol (2019), Birthday (2019), and The Book of Fish (2021). His performance in Kingmaker (2021) earned him another Baeksang Best Actor award. In addition to acting, Sol began teaching as an adjunct professor at Hanyang University in 2014, and in 2022, his career was celebrated with a special actor exhibition at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival.

In recent years, Sol expanded into streaming platforms. He starred in the 2023 Netflix action film Kill Boksoon and made his streaming series debut in the 2024 political drama The Whirlwind. He was also cast in the streaming series Hyper Knife.
