Jeon Do-yeon

Jeon Do-yeon is a South Korean actress who gained widespread recognition through her work in television and feature films. After making her screen debut on television, she transitioned to film with the melodrama The Contact in 1997. Over her career, she built a reputation for versatility across diverse genres. She achieved historic international acclaim for her performance in the 2007 film Secret Sunshine, which made her the first Korean performer to win an acting prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

Jeon was born on February 11, 1973, in the Seodaemun District of Seoul, South Korea. She grew up in Seoul as the youngest child in her family, alongside two older brothers. She completed her schooling at Bukgajwa Elementary School, Yeonhee Girls Middle School, and Changduk Girls High School before studying in the Department of Broadcasting at the Seoul Institute of the Arts.

Her career in the entertainment industry began in 1990 as a commercial model for Johnson & Johnson. She made her television acting debut in the 1992 series Our Heaven and appeared in several supporting roles before receiving significant attention for her performance in the 1995 drama Our Sunny Days of Youth. After appearing in various television productions, she made her feature film debut in the 1997 hit film The Contact, which earned her Best New Actress honors at both the Grand Bell Awards and the Blue Dragon Film Awards.

Following her cinematic debut, Jeon established herself as a prominent film actress through key roles in projects such as A Promise, The Harmonium in My Memory, and Happy End. Her performances earned her multiple Best Actress honors, including Baeksang Arts, Blue Dragon, and Grand Bell awards. She continued starring in varied films, including I Wish I Had a Wife, No Blood No Tears, Untold Scandal, My Mother, the Mermaid, and You Are My Sunshine. In 2005, she also starred in the television series Lovers in Prague, winning the Grand Prize at the SBS Drama Awards.

Jeon reached international prominence with her role as a grieving mother in the 2007 film Secret Sunshine. Her performance won Best Actress at the 60th Cannes Film Festival and the Asia Pacific Screen Awards, alongside domestic accolades and the Okgwan Order of Cultural Merit. She subsequently starred in My Dear Enemy, The Housemaid, Countdown, and Way Back Home. In 2014, she served as a jury member for the main competition at the 67th Cannes Film Festival.

In subsequent years, Jeon appeared in films such as The Shameless, Memories of the Sword, A Man and a Woman, Birthday, Beasts Clawing at Straws, and Emergency Declaration. Her role in Birthday earned her additional domestic acting awards and a Golden Mulberry Lifetime Achievement Award at the Far East Film Festival. On television, she returned to series acting with The Good Wife, Lost, and the 2023 romantic comedy Crash Course in Romance, while also taking the title role in the 2023 action film Kill Boksoon.
