South Korean cinema icon Jeon Do-yeon has emerged as a prominent awards-season candidate for Best Actress at the upcoming 99th Academy Awards following her lead performance in director Lee Chang-dong’s new drama Possible Love. Major entertainment publications, led by The Hollywood Reporter, highlighted Jeon’s portrayal of Mi-ok, noting that a nomination would make her the first South Korean performer ever recognized in the Oscars' lead actress category.
In Possible Love, Jeon stars as the wife of a displaced factory worker whose life collides with a wealthy filmmaking couple when she agrees to participate in a documentary project. Critics across international outlets have praised the emotional intensity and layered complexity of her performance, calling her work in the feature astonishingly human and central to the narrative’s balance between vulnerability and resilience.
The film represents a major cinematic reunion between Jeon and veteran director Lee Chang-dong, who previously directed her to a historic Best Actress victory at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival for Secret Sunshine. Possible Love marks Lee's first feature film in eight years since 2018's Burning. The project debuted to widespread acclaim at the Venice International Film Festival in September 2026, where it won the prestigious Grand Jury Prize, and currently maintains a 100 percent approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
The film's cast also includes prominent South Korean stars Sul Kyung-gu, Cho Yeo-jeong, and Zo In-sung. Following its theatrical premiere in South Korea in late September, Possible Love expanded into international theaters and onto Netflix's global streaming platform, fueling momentum for its upcoming campaign throughout the international film awards circuit.
As industry voters begin assessing candidates for the ceremony at Hollywood's Dolby Theatre, Jeon's performance continues to be cited as a benchmark for international cinema acting this season, placing her alongside leading global talent in early Oscar race tracking.
