Kim Mu-yeol

Kim Mu-yeol is a South Korean actor born on May 22, 1982. Given the birth name Mu-yeol-wang by his grandfather, he began his career in musical theatre before moving into minor film and television roles. He gained wider recognition through his performance in the 2011 period action film War of the Arrows, leading to a major film role in A Muse in 2012. He subsequently starred in prominent film and television projects, including Northern Limit Line, Forgotten, The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil, Honest Candidate, The Roundup: Punishment, and the drama series Teach You a Lesson.

Raised in a humble household, Kim experienced financial hardship during the 1997 IMF crisis when his father's health declined. Kim became his family's primary provider while pursuing his education, working part-time jobs in construction, building security, flyer distribution, department stores, a cellphone factory, and nightclubs. Despite opposition from his civil servant father, Kim attended acting school and Anyang Arts High School, where he performed in Sins of this World. Despite low high school grades, strong college entrance exam scores earned him admission to the Acting Department at Sungkyunkwan University. His father later passed away in 2010.

Kim made his theatrical debut in 2002 in the musical Jjangtta, spending four years in ensemble performance. His 2005 audition for Subway Line 1 led to lead roles in Assassin and Grease. He expanded his stage repertoire through productions including Altar Boyz, Singin' in the Rain, Thrill Me, Finding Mr. Destiny, Jack the Ripper, Gwanghwamun Love Song, The Three Musketeers, and Guys and Dolls. In 2009, he won Best Actor at the Korea Musical Awards for portraying Melchior in Spring Awakening. He later performed in the Japanese run of Thrill Me in 2012.

Kim made his television debut in the 2007 one-act drama Drama City - For the New Wave, followed by a role in Chosun Police. His supporting role as a bond broker in the 2009 film The Scam and his work in War of the Arrows established his screen presence. Following his film stardom in A Muse, he took a hiatus for military enlistment, returning in 2014. He subsequently starred in the 2015 naval thriller Northern Limit Line and was cast as the lead in the television series Bad Guys.

Kim's mandatory military service involved public scrutiny over an initial low-income exemption granted due to heavy family debt from his father's medical care. Kim voluntarily enlisted in October 2012, later starring in the military musical production The Promise in 2013. Following the disbandment of the military entertainment unit, he was reassigned to a frontline combat unit in the 12th Infantry Division. After undergoing knee cartilage surgery and rehabilitation in early 2014, he was officially discharged on July 8, 2014.

Kim married actress Yoon Seung-ah on April 4, 2015, following a public confirmation of their relationship in February 2012. The couple welcomed their first child, a son named Kim Tae-myeong, on June 8, 2023.
