Nam was born on September 17, 1995, in Incheon, South Korea. At age six, she relocated with her family to Bupyeong District. She attended Baekun Elementary School and Sangjeong Middle School before graduating from Incheon Choeun High School. In 2014, she gained admission to Sogang University as a Psychology major, completing her degree in February 2020 while balancing her active acting career.
Before her official acting debut, Nam worked as a magazine child model and appeared on the MBC entertainment show Radio Report. She made her television acting debut in February 2004 in the MBC series Say You Love Me and her film debut in Shadowless Sword (2005). She took on a film lead role in My Captain, Mr. Underground (2006) and won the Best Young Actress Award at the 2006 SBS Drama Awards for her performance in My Love. Her child acting career expanded with roles in Mapado 2: Back to the Island, Lobbyist, The Great King, Sejong, East of Eden, Queen Seondeok, and Will It Snow for Christmas?. She received Best Young Actress awards at the MBC Drama Awards in both 2008 and 2009 for East of Eden and Queen Seondeok.
In the early 2010s, Nam appeared in A Reason to Live (2011) and won the Best Young Actress award at the 2012 KBS Drama Awards for Girl Detective, Park Hae-sol. She transitioned into adult roles with the 2013 film Hwayi: A Monster Boy, earning a nomination for Best New Actress at the Blue Dragon Film Awards. She followed this with roles in Angel Eyes and What Happens to My Family? in 2014, winning the Best New Actress award and the Best Couple Award with Park Hyung-sik at the 2014 KBS Drama Awards. In 2016, she starred in her first miniseries lead role in Shopping King Louie and appeared in the film Tunnel.
Nam's career continued to grow with prominent television roles. In 2017, she played prosecutor trainee and lawyer Eun Bong-hee in Suspicious Partner, winning the Excellence Award at the 2017 SBS Drama Awards. In 2018, she starred alongside Doh Kyung-soo in the historical drama 100 Days My Prince, which became one of the highest-rated cable series in South Korean television history. She subsequently starred in 365: Repeat the Year (2020), receiving the Best Actress in a Monday-Tuesday Miniseries award at the 2020 MBC Drama Awards.
In recent years, Nam starred in the streaming series The Witch's Diner (2021), tvN's Little Women (2022) as reporter Oh In-kyung, and the thriller High Cookie (2023). In 2024, she played rookie divorce lawyer Han Yu-ri in Good Partner, earning the Top Excellence Award at the 2024 SBS Drama Awards. She returned to historical romantic comedy portraying Hong Eun-Jo. Beyond acting, Nam has modeled for brands including Clean & Clear, Ugongbi, Beanpole, and Hyundai, and participated in a 2010 charity campaign with Good Neighbors.
