Born on May 8, 1986, in Seoul, South Korea, Kim grew up as an only child. After experiencing a childhood trauma during elementary school that caused him to develop severe anxiety and an introverted personality, he discovered an interest in performing arts during high school. He subsequently pursued a degree at the Seoul Institute of the Arts, focusing heavily on theater studies and participating in campus drama productions.

Kim launched his professional career on stage in 2009 in the Daehakro theater district with the play New Boeing Boeing. Over the following years, he established a strong reputation in the theater community, appearing in numerous stage productions such as True West, Kiss of the Spider Woman, and Closer. His theatrical success and growing popularity earned him the nickname theater idol among local audiences.

He made his television debut in 2017 with a supporting role in the drama Good Manager. Later that year, he gained prominent secondary roles in Strongest Deliveryman and Two Cops, winning two honors at the MBC Drama Awards for his performance in the latter. After securing his first leading role in the 2018 drama special You Drive Me Crazy, he continued building his screen portfolio with major roles in 100 Days My Prince, Welcome to Waikiki 2, and Catch the Ghost. In 2019, he also joined the main cast of the reality program 2 Days & 1 Night, receiving a Rookie Award for his work on the show.

Following his major breakthrough in Start-Up, which earned him the Most Popular Actor Award at the 57th Baeksang Arts Awards, Kim solidified his status as a leading actor with Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha. His performance in the hit romantic comedy led to him being named Gallup Korea's Television Actor of the Year. In 2023, he made his feature film debut in the action noir The Childe, receiving several Best New Actor accolades, and later starred in the 2024 streaming project The Tyrant.

Kim has maintained an active career across television, film, and theater. His recent work includes a starring role in the Netflix series Can This Love Be Translated? and an appearance on the variety program Bonjour Bakery, both yielding nominations at the 5th Blue Dragon Series Awards. Alongside his acting, he works as a brand model across South Korea and Asia and regularly participates in philanthropic activities.
