Nicolas Cage

Nicolas Cage, born Nicolas Kim Coppola on January 7, 1964, in Long Beach, California, is an American actor and film producer. Recognized for his versatility across diverse film genres, he has cultivated a significant cult following and earned numerous accolades, including an Academy Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a Golden Globe Award. In 1998, Cage was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and he was later voted one of the 50 greatest actors of all time in a 2022 readers' poll by Empire magazine.

Raised in a Catholic family, Cage is the youngest of three sons born to August Coppola, a literature professor of Italian descent, and Joy Vogelsang, a dancer and choreographer of German, Polish, English, and Scottish heritage. His extended family includes prominent figures in cinema, such as his uncle, director Francis Ford Coppola, and his aunt, actress Talia Shire. Aspiring to act from an early age after being inspired by James Dean, Cage attended Beverly Hills High School and the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. To avoid the appearance of nepotism, he adopted the professional name Nicolas Cage, inspired by Marvel Comics superhero Luke Cage and composer John Cage.

Cage made his acting debut in the 1981 television pilot The Best of Times and his film debut in Fast Times at Ridgemont High in 1982. He landed his first lead role in the 1983 romantic comedy Valley Girl. Throughout the 1980s, Cage appeared in several films directed by his uncle, including Rumble Fish, The Cotton Club, and Peggy Sue Got Married, alongside roles in Alan Parker's drama Birdy and the Coen brothers' crime comedy Raising Arizona. His major breakthrough arrived with the 1987 romantic comedy Moonstruck, which garnered him a Golden Globe nomination.

After starring in films such as Vampire's Kiss, Wild at Heart, and Honeymoon in Vegas, Cage achieved major critical acclaim for his performance as an alcoholic screenwriter in Leaving Las Vegas (1995), winning the Academy Award for Best Actor and a Golden Globe Award. He subsequently established himself as a mainstream action star with lead roles in blockbuster releases including The Rock, Con Air, Face/Off, and Gone in 60 Seconds. In 2002, he received another Oscar nomination for portraying real-life screenwriter Charlie Kaufman and his fictional twin Donald in Adaptation.

Cage continued starring in high-profile projects, including the National Treasure and Ghost Rider film series. He also took on roles in dramatic and comedic films like Matchstick Men, provided voice acting for animated features such as The Ant Bully, The Croods series, and played Spider-Man Noir in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. As a filmmaker, Cage operates the production company Saturn Films, which produced movies like Shadow of the Vampire and The Life of David Gale, and he made his directorial debut with the drama Sonny in 2002.

In recent years, Cage earned renewed critical recognition for his lead performances in independent and genre films, including Mandy, Pig, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, Dream Scenario, and Longlegs. He has also remained active in voice acting, continuing his portrayal of Spider-Man Noir in projects such as Spider-Noir and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
