About Sean Young
Mary Sean Lujan (née Young) is an American actress born on November 20, 1959. She is recognized for her performances across various film genres, notably starring in science-fiction and comedy productions during the 1980s and 1990s.
Young was born in Louisville, Kentucky, to Donald Young Jr., a television producer and journalist, and Lee Guthrie (Mary Lee Kane), a screenwriter, public-relations executive, and journalist. She pursued her education at the Interlochen Arts Academy in Interlochen, Michigan, and also studied at the School of American Ballet in New York City.
She began her film career in Jane Austen in Manhattan (1980) before earning her first successful role in the 1981 comedy Stripes. Young rose to prominence after being cast as Rachael opposite Harrison Ford in the science-fiction film Blade Runner (1982). Her career continued with performances in Young Doctors in Love (1982), Dune (1984), Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend (1985), and Under the Biltmore Clock (1986). In 1987, she appeared as Gordon Gekko's wife in Wall Street—a role reduced following clashes with director Oliver Stone—and played the lover of a politician in No Way Out. She later acted in The Boost (1988), Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me (1992), Fatal Instinct (1993), Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994), and Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde (1995).
Throughout her career, Young experienced notable casting developments and public moments. She was cast as Vicki Vale in Batman (1989), but was replaced by Kim Basinger after breaking her arm during rehearsals. She actively campaigned for the role of Catwoman in Batman Returns (1992), visiting the studio lot in a self-made costume and advocating for the part on television, though the studio selected a different direction. In 1991, she received the Worst Actress and Worst Supporting Actress Razzie Awards for her work in A Kiss Before Dying. In 1989, a harassment lawsuit filed against her by actor James Woods was settled out of court, resulting in Young being awarded $227,000 to cover legal costs.
During most of the 1990s, Young lived in Sedona, Arizona. She reprised her voice role as Rachael in the 1997 Blade Runner video game. In the 2000s, her work shifted toward independent feature projects such as Poor White Trash (2000), Mockingbird Don't Sing (2001), and Sugar & Spice (2001). She also spent four months in Russia portraying dancer Isadora Duncan in the miniseries Yesenin (2005).
Young has also appeared in television and reality programs, competing in Gone Country 2 (2008), where she placed fourth overall in a demolition derby competition, and Skating with the Stars (2010). She portrayed Canadian barmaid Meggie McClain on The Young and the Restless in a recurring capacity from 2010 to 2011. Following an appearance on Late Show with David Letterman in 2011 to promote her search for movie roles, she was cast in Fragments From Olympus: The Vision of Nikola Tesla. She later appeared in Star Trek: Renegades (2015) and reprised her role as Rachael in Blade Runner 2049 (2017) through archival footage, CG work, and serving as an acting coach.
