About Udo Kier
Udo Kier, born Udo Kierspe, was a German actor known primarily for playing eccentric and deviant figures. Over his career, he appeared in more than 200 films in both leading and supporting roles across Europe and the Americas. Recognized as a cult icon, he established a strong presence in both mainstream genre cinema and art-house film circles.
Kier was born in Cologne, Germany, on October 14, 1944. Shortly after his birth, the hospital was destroyed in the Allied bombing during World War II, and he and his mother were rescued from the rubble. Raised without a father, Kier served as an altar boy and chorister, and began modeling as a teenager. At age 16, he befriended director Rainer Werner Fassbinder. At 19, he moved to London to study acting and English while working as a waiter, and later spent time modeling and living in Cannes, Rome, and New York City.
Kier made his screen debut in the 1966 British short film Road to Saint Tropez, followed by his feature debut in Schamlos in 1968 and a lead role in Mark of the Devil in 1970. His breakthrough came when he starred in Paul Morrissey's cult films Flesh for Frankenstein (1973) and Blood for Dracula (1974). These roles made him a horror icon and led to future vampire roles in films such as Blade, Modern Vampires, Shadow of the Vampire, Dracula 3000, and BloodRayne.
Over the decades, Kier worked with acclaimed directors including Fassbinder, Dario Argento, Gus Van Sant, Werner Herzog, Wim Wenders, Walerian Borowczyk, Kleber Mendonça Filho, Guy Maddin, and Rob Zombie. He also became a frequent collaborator of Lars von Trier, appearing in almost all of the director's feature films starting with Epidemic in 1987.
His Hollywood work included roles in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Barb Wire, Armageddon, Johnny Mnemonic, and The Adventures of Pinocchio. Beyond feature films, Kier appeared in Madonna's 1992 book Sex and featured in music videos for Madonna, Korn, and Eve featuring Gwen Stefani. He also worked extensively as a voice actor, lending his voice to video games like Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 and Call of Duty: WWII, as well as animated shows including The Batman and Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated.
Kier received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Male Lead for Swan Song (2021). Openly gay throughout his career, he was awarded a Special Teddy Award at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival for his contributions to queer cinema. He was also honored with two documentary films about his life in 2012 and 2024.
Kier resided in Palm Springs, California, starting in 1991, and joined the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2020. He died on November 23, 2025, at the age of 81 in Rancho Mirage, California. Posthumously, he appeared in the fourth season of the television series Dark Winds.
