About Gwen Stefani
Gwen Renée Stefani Shelton is an American singer, songwriter, and fashion designer. She rose to fame as the lead vocalist of the band No Doubt before establishing a successful solo music career. She is also known for her ventures in fashion and television, as well as her collaborative works across pop, ska, and electronic music styles.
Stefani was born on October 3, 1969, in Fullerton, California, and raised Catholic in Anaheim. Her father, Dennis Stefani, worked as a Yamaha marketing executive, and her mother, Patti, worked as an accountant before becoming a homemaker. She grew up alongside three siblings: Jill, Todd, and Eric. She graduated from Loara High School in 1987 and attended Fullerton College and Cypress College before transferring to California State University, Fullerton, which she later left to pursue music full-time.
In 1986, Stefani joined No Doubt, a ska band co-founded by her brother Eric. She became the sole lead singer following the death of original vocalist John Spence in December 1987. The group signed with Interscope Records in 1991 and released their self-titled debut in 1992. No Doubt achieved mainstream breakthrough success with their 1995 album Tragic Kingdom, which sold over 16 million copies worldwide by 2004 and featured hit singles such as "Just a Girl", "Spiderwebs", and "Don't Speak". The band continued releasing albums, including Return of Saturn (2000), Rock Steady (2001), and Push and Shove (2012).
Stefani launched her solo pop career in 2004 with the release of her debut studio album, Love. Angel. Music. Baby. Inspired by 1980s music, the multi-platinum album produced hit singles including "What You Waiting For?", "Rich Girl", "Cool", and "Hollaback Girl", the latter becoming the first US digital download to sell one million copies. She followed with The Sweet Escape (2006), featuring the successful title track and "Wind It Up". Her third solo album, This Is What the Truth Feels Like (2016), became her first to reach number one on the Billboard 200 chart. She later released the Christmas album You Make It Feel Like Christmas (2017) and her fifth studio album, Bouquet (2024).
Beyond her primary releases, Stefani has engaged in high-profile musical collaborations, acting, and design projects. She won a Grammy Award alongside rapper Eve for their collaboration "Let Me Blow Ya Mind" and has recorded songs with her husband, Blake Shelton, including "Nobody but You" (2020). Stefani made her film debut as Jean Harlow in Martin Scorsese's The Aviator (2004) and joined the television series The Voice as a coach. In fashion, she debuted her clothing line L.A.M.B. in 2003 and expanded her collection with the Harajuku Lovers line in 2005.
Over the course of her career, Stefani has received numerous honors, including three Grammy Awards, an American Music Award, a Brit Award, a World Music Award, and two Billboard Music Awards. Billboard magazine ranked her among the top overall and Hot 100 artists of the 2000–2009 decade, and VH1 listed her 13th on their 100 Greatest Women in Music list in 2012. In 2023, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
