Kelly Rutherford

Kelly Rutherford is an American actress born on November 6, 1968. She is best known for her prominent television roles, including playing Stephanie "Sam" Whitmore on the daytime soap opera Generations, Megan Lewis on the primetime soap opera Melrose Place, and Lily van der Woodsen on the drama series Gossip Girl.

Rutherford was born in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, to her mother Ann Edwards, and she has a brother named Anthony. She is of English, Scottish, and Danish descent. During her youth, she attended Corona del Mar High School in Newport Beach, California. To pursue acting, she later studied performance at HB Studio in New York City as well as the Beverly Hills Playhouse in California.

Her acting career began on daytime television with an appearance on Loving in 1987, followed by her regular role on Generations from 1989 to 1991. In 1992, she joined the cast of the drama Homefront. She subsequently starred as saloon singer Dixie Cousins in the series The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. from 1993 to 1994, and appeared in the film I Love Trouble. She held main roles in short-lived series such as The Great Defender in 1995 and Kindred: The Embraced in 1996. Later in 1996, Rutherford landed her prominent role as Megan Lewis on Melrose Place, remaining with the show until 1999.

In 2000, Rutherford featured as Christine Hamilton in the horror film Scream 3. Her television career continued with regular roles on Threat Matrix from 2003 to 2004 and the series E-Ring on NBC. In 2007, she began playing Lily van der Woodsen on Gossip Girl, a main role she maintained until the series ended in 2012. Following Gossip Girl, she starred in various Lifetime television films, secured a recurring role as Laura Wyatt on Quantico in 2016, and portrayed Melissa Daniels in the reboot of Dynasty from 2018 to 2019.

Rutherford married Carlos Tarajano in June 2001, filing for divorce six months later in January 2002; their wedding was subsequently featured in InStyle magazine. In August 2006, she married Daniel Giersch, with whom she had a son, Hermès Gustaf Daniel Giersch, in October 2006. She filed for divorce in December 2008 while pregnant with their second child, daughter Helena Grace, who was born in June 2009.

Following their separation, Rutherford and Giersch entered an extensive international child custody dispute. After Giersch's U.S. visa was revoked in 2012, court rulings sent the children to live primarily with him in France and Monaco. The legal costs associated with the dispute reached approximately $1.5 million, leading Rutherford to file for bankruptcy in June 2013 with around $2 million in total debt. Subsequent court cases in California, New York, and Monaco ultimately confirmed in December 2015 that full custody remained with Giersch, granting Rutherford extensive visitation rights.
