Kate Beckinsale

Kathrin Romany Beckinsale is an English actress who rose to prominence through her roles in British costume dramas, romantic comedies, and major Hollywood action franchises. Born on 26 July 1973 in Isleworth, London, she is the only child of actors Richard Beckinsale and Judy Loe. Following her father's death when she was five years old, she was raised by her mother and stepfather, director Roy Battersby. She attended Godolphin and Latymer School in West London, where she twice won the WH Smith Young Writers Award, before studying French and Russian literature at New College, Oxford.

While studying at Oxford, Beckinsale participated in student theater productions with the Oxford University Dramatic Society and made her television debut in 1991. She secured her feature film debut as Hero in Kenneth Branagh's 1993 adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing, which she filmed during a university summer break. After appearing in additional screen projects such as Prince of Jutland and Uncovered, she decided to leave Oxford in 1995 to focus entirely on her acting career.

Following her departure from university, Beckinsale gained wider recognition in British period dramas and independent projects. In 1995, she starred as Flora Poste in John Schlesinger's film adaptation of Cold Comfort Farm and made her professional stage debut as Nina in The Seagull at the Theatre Royal, Bath. She subsequently played the title character in an ITV adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma in 1996 and appeared in the commercially successful British comedy Shooting Fish in 1997.

Beckinsale transitioned to American feature films in the late 1990s, beginning with her acclaimed performance in Whit Stillman's The Last Days of Disco in 1998, which earned her a London Critics' Circle Film Award. She followed this with roles in Brokedown Palace in 1999 and Merchant Ivory's adaptation of The Golden Bowl in 2000. Her public profile expanded significantly in 2001 when she starred in the romantic comedy Serendipity and the high-budget war drama Pearl Harbor.

In 2003, Beckinsale took on the lead role of Selene in the action film Underworld, a franchise she continued to headline through 2016. This shift toward action cinema led to prominent roles in major studio releases, including Van Helsing in 2004, Martin Scorsese's biographical drama The Aviator in 2004, and the sci-fi remake Total Recall in 2012.

Alongside her work in large-scale studio productions, Beckinsale maintained a presence in smaller-scale independent dramas. She received critical praise for her performances in films such as Snow Angels in 2007, Love & Friendship in 2016, and The Only Living Boy in New York in 2017. In 2019, she returned to television with a starring role in the limited drama series The Widow.
