About Emma Bunton

Emma Lee Bunton is an English singer, actress, and media personality who was born on 21 January 1976 in Finchley, Barnet, London. She attended St Theresa's Roman Catholic Primary School before enrolling at the Sylvia Young Theatre School. Her parents separated when she was 11 years old, after which she lived with her mother. During her time at theatre school, she befriended actress Keeley Hawes. Early in her career, Bunton appeared in television series including EastEnders in 1992, as well as The Bill and To Play the King in 1993.

Bunton rose to global prominence in the mid-1990s as a member of the pop group the Spice Girls. Joining after the departure of earlier candidates, she became the youngest member of the group and earned the media nickname Baby Spice. The group achieved massive international success, beginning with their debut single Wannabe in 1996, which topped charts in 35 countries and became the best-selling single by an all-female group. The Spice Girls released three studio albums—Spice, Spiceworld, and Forever—and achieved nine UK number-one singles before entering an indefinite hiatus in 2000. With over 100 million records sold worldwide, they became the best-selling female group in history.

Following the group's hiatus, Bunton launched her solo recording career. She had previously achieved a hit in 1999 with a cover of What I Am alongside Tin Tin Out. Her debut solo studio album, A Girl Like Me, was released in April 2001, debuting at number four on the UK Albums Chart and earning a gold certification. The album featured the number-one UK single What Took You So Long?, along with Take My Breath Away and We're Not Gonna Sleep Tonight.

Bunton released her second studio album, Free Me, in 2004 under 19 Recordings. Drawing inspiration from 1960s pop and Motown music, the gold-certified album reached number seven in the UK and produced the top-five singles Free Me, Maybe, and I'll Be There. In 2006, she released her third studio album, Life in Mono, which included the BBC Children in Need charity single Downtown. After a prolonged break from solo releases, she signed with BMG Rights Management and released her fourth studio album, My Happy Place, in 2019.

Throughout her career, Bunton has also reunited with the Spice Girls for major projects, including their 2007 Greatest Hits album, the Return of the Spice Girls tour, a performance at the 2012 Summer Olympics closing ceremony, and the Spice World 2019 UK and Ireland tour. Outside of her music career, she finished third on the television competition Strictly Come Dancing in 2006 and served as a judge on shows such as Dancing on Ice, Your Face Sounds Familiar, and Boy Band. Bunton co-presented the Heart Breakfast radio show from 2013 to 2018 and hosts her own Sunday evening show on Heart Radio.
