Hall was born in Gonzales, Texas, to Marjorie Sheffield, a medical records librarian, and John P. Hall. She is of English, Irish, and Dutch descent. Hall graduated early from North Mesquite High School at age 16 while taking classes at Eastfield College in archery, tennis, and gymnastics. She has a twin sister, Terry, and three older sisters, including Rosy Hall, one of the first Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. Through an appearance on the television series Who Do You Think You Are?, Hall discovered she is a descendant of Humphrey Best, an associate of pioneer Daniel Boone.
Hall was discovered alongside her twin sister by fashion agent Claude Haddad while sunbathing in Saint Tropez. She moved to Paris, sharing an apartment with Grace Jones and Jessica Lange, and her modeling career took off after she appeared as a mermaid on the cover of Roxy Music's 1975 album Siren. By 1977, she was earning over $1,000 per day and had appeared on 40 magazine covers, including Cosmopolitan and Italian Vogue. Hall modeled repeatedly for Andy Warhol and served as a muse for artists Lucian Freud, Ed Ruscha, and Francesco Clemente.
Hall expanded into acting with roles in films like Urban Cowboy (1980) and Tim Burton's Batman (1989). She made her professional stage debut as Cherie in a 1988 summer stock revival of Bus Stop, later reprising the role for her London West End debut in 1990. Her stage career includes performances in The Graduate on Broadway, Picasso's Women, Cole Porter's High Society, and Love Letters. On television, she played Miss Scarlett in Cluedo, voiced Sister Penelope in Popetown, starred in the reality show Kept, and appeared on programs like The Detectives, Hotel Babylon, French and Saunders, and Strictly Come Dancing.
In addition to modeling and acting, Hall served as a judge for the Whitbread Prize in 2000, published her autobiography Jerry Hall: My Life in Pictures in 2010, sold her art collection through Sotheby's, and performed original country and western music at Glastonbury in 2014. Her honors include receiving a Fashion Group International Dallas Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016 and setting a Guinness World Record in 2004 for making six musical stage appearances in a single night in London's West End.
In her personal life, Hall dated Bryan Ferry before beginning a long-term relationship with Mick Jagger, with whom she had four children before separating in 1999. In 2016, she married Rupert Murdoch, and their divorce was finalized in 2022. Hall is dyslexic. She is set to appear on the second series of The Celebrity Traitors in autumn 2026.
