Kate Moss

Katherine Ann Moss is an English model who rose to fame in the early 1990s as part of the heroin chic fashion trend. Known for her waifish figure and her role in size zero fashion, her early collaborations with Calvin Klein established her status as a fashion icon. Over her career, she has expanded her work to include fashion design, business ventures, musical collaborations, and media projects, in addition to serving as a contributing fashion editor for British Vogue.

Moss was born on 16 January 1974 in Croydon, London, to Linda Rosina Moss, a barmaid, and Peter Edward Moss, an airline employee. She was raised in the Addiscombe and Sanderstead areas of the borough alongside her younger brother, Nick, and she also has a half-sister named Lottie. Her parents divorced when she was 13. Moss attended Ridgeway Primary School and Riddlesdown High School in Purley, working local retail jobs during her early teens.

In 1988, at age 14, Moss was recruited as a model at JFK Airport in New York by Sarah Doukas, founder of Storm Management. At age 16, she was photographed by Corinne Day for a shoot titled "The 3rd Summer of Love" in The Face. She gained further prominence through a successful Levi's campaign and a 1992 Calvin Klein advertisement alongside Mark Wahlberg. Positioned as an "anti-supermodel" in contrast to the athletic models of the era, her lean form in a 1996 Calvin Klein campaign helped popularize the term heroin chic.

Throughout her career, Moss has appeared in advertising campaigns for high-profile fashion houses such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Gucci, Burberry, Versace, and Alexander McQueen. She has graced the covers of numerous international magazines, including British Vogue 30 times, as well as inaugural covers for Russian and Japanese Vogue. In addition to modeling, she launched clothing lines with Topshop, designed handbags for Longchamp, released fragrances with Coty, and founded the Kate Moss Agency in 2016.

In September 2005, Moss faced media scrutiny after photos were published showing her using cocaine. The scandal resulted in several brands, including H&M and Burberry, dropping her from campaigns. She apologized, and in June 2006, British police dropped all charges due to a lack of evidence. Following her clearance, Moss resumed her career, signing 18 contracts for the autumn-winter 2006 season.

Moss has been the subject of numerous cultural depictions and artistic works. In 2002, artist Lucian Freud painted a nude portrait of her while she was pregnant, and in 2008, sculptor Marc Quinn created an 18-carat gold statue of her titled Siren for a British Museum exhibition. Her achievements have earned her significant recognition, including the Council of Fashion Designers of America fashion influence award, Model of the Year at the 2006 British Fashion Awards, and a Special Recognition award in 2013 honoring her 25-year contribution to fashion.

Beyond fashion, Moss has participated in various music and screen projects. She has played instruments or provided vocals for tracks by Primal Scream, Babyshambles, and Oasis, and appeared in music videos for artists including Elton John, Paul McCartney, and Johnny Cash. Her screen appearances include roles in Blackadder: Back & Forth and The Boy in the Dress. She has also supported philanthropic efforts, including War Child and Cancer Research UK.
