Rebel Wilson

Rebel Melanie Elizabeth Wilson (born Melanie Elizabeth Bownds on 2 March 1980) is an Australian actress, comedian, and producer. She first gained public attention through Australian stage and television productions before moving to Hollywood. She achieved widespread international recognition for her starring role as Fat Amy in the musical comedy Pitch Perfect film series (2012–2017), alongside prominent roles across numerous feature comedies and television projects.

Wilson was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, to parents who worked as professional dog handlers, judges, and breeders. She grew up in the suburbs of Kenthurst, Parramatta, and Castle Hill, attending the Tara Anglican School for Girls. Although her early academic focus was mathematics, she later attended the University of New South Wales, graduating in 2009 with degrees in Theatre and Performance Studies and Law. Her decision to pursue acting was inspired by hallucinations she experienced while recovering from malaria in South Africa as a youth ambassador.

After graduating from the Australian Theatre for Young People in 2003, Wilson wrote, produced, and starred in stage productions such as The Westie Monologues. She gained recognition on Australian television through her roles in the SBS comedy series Pizza (2003–2007) and the sketch comedy show The Wedge (2006–2007). In 2008, she created, wrote, produced, and starred in the musical comedy series Bogan Pride. She also earned the Tropfest Best Actress award in 2009 for her performance in the short film Bargain.

In 2010, Wilson relocated to the United States and quickly earned a breakthrough role in the comedy film Bridesmaids (2011). This success led to roles in feature films including A Few Best Men, What to Expect When You're Expecting, and Bachelorette. Her high-profile portrayal of Fat Amy in Pitch Perfect (2012) earned critical acclaim and award recognition, including an MTV Movie Award and a Teen Choice Award, leading her to reprise the character in sequels released in 2015 and 2017.

Expanding her television work in the United States, Wilson created, wrote, produced, and starred in the 2013 ABC sitcom Super Fun Night. Her film screen credits continued to grow with appearances in Pain & Gain (2013), How to Be Single (2016), and Grimsby (2016). Outside of film and television, she performed as Ursula in a concert version of The Little Mermaid at the Hollywood Bowl in 2016 and made her West End stage debut in Guys and Dolls that same year.

In 2019, Wilson took on her first solo lead film role and first producer credit in the romantic comedy Isn't It Romantic, followed by roles in The Hustle, Jojo Rabbit, and Cats. She subsequently hosted the dog styling competition show Pooch Perfect, starred in and produced the 2022 Netflix comedy Senior Year, and appeared in her first non-comedy film role in The Almond and the Seahorse (2022). Wilson also made her directorial debut with the musical comedy film The Deb.
