Australian multi-hyphenate Rebel Wilson brought her latest cinematic project to Canada on September 11, 2026, hosting the world premiere of her feature film Girl Group at the Toronto International Film Festival. The gala presentation took place at the prestigious Roy Thomson Hall, where Wilson walked the red carpet alongside her co-stars and creative team. Wilson wrote, directed, produced, and stars in the ambitious musical comedy, which explores pop nostalgia and second chances.

The storyline centers on Tassie Young, played by Wilson, a former 1990s pop icon whose attempt at a solo music career founders after a legal infraction. Sentenced to community service, she is tasked with mentoring a group of aspiring young vocalists, forcing her to confront her past while guiding new talent. The film features a high-profile ensemble cast that includes Jennifer Coolidge alongside former real-life pop group members Melanie C of the Spice Girls, Ashley Roberts of the Pussycat Dolls, and Shaznay Lewis of All Saints.

Girl Group marks Wilson’s second feature film behind the camera as a director, following her directorial debut with the musical comedy The Deb, which also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024. With her newest effort, Wilson combines energetic original song sequences with comedic storytelling, leaning heavily on audience affection for vintage pop culture and girl group dynamics from the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Wilson first gained international recognition as a comedic powerhouse through breakthrough roles in blockbuster comedy films such as Bridesmaids and Pitch Perfect. Her performance as Fat Amy in the Pitch Perfect franchise established her as a global fan favorite, leading to headlining roles in studio releases including Isn't It Romantic, How to Be Single, and the Netflix comedy feature Senior Year.

Following its high-profile premiere in Toronto, Girl Group is set to continue its international festival run ahead of its commercial theatrical distribution. As Wilson expands her artistic portfolio into writing, directing, and producing, her dual presence in front of and behind the camera positions her as a versatile creative force in international cinema.
