Raised in a Jewish family of Ukrainian and Russian descent, he holds dual citizenship in Canada and the United States. His mother worked as a social worker, while his father worked for non-profit organizations. Rogen attended Vancouver Talmud Torah Elementary School and Point Grey Secondary School, practiced kyokushin karate for ten years, and began performing stand-up comedy as a youth at Camp Miriam.
Rogen decided to pursue a career in comedy at a young age, enrolling in a comedy workshop at age 12. At age 13, he began co-writing a rough draft of the film Superbad with his childhood friend Evan Goldberg. As a teenager, Rogen performed stand-up routines at private events, small parties, and local bars, placing second in the Vancouver Amateur Comedy Contest at age 16. That same year, he landed his debut acting role as Ken Miller in Judd Apatow's television series Freaks and Geeks, prompting him to drop out of high school and relocate with his family to Los Angeles.
Following Freaks and Geeks, Rogen worked as an actor and staff writer on Apatow's television series Undeclared. He went on to secure early film roles in Donnie Darko and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. In 2004, he worked as a staff writer for the final season of Da Ali G Show, earning a Primetime Emmy Award nomination. He gained broader public recognition after co-producing and acting in Apatow's feature comedy The 40-Year-Old Virgin in 2005, which led to further film appearances such as a role in You, Me and Dupree.
Rogen achieved his breakthrough as a leading film actor in Apatow's 2007 romantic comedy Knocked Up, which became a critical and commercial success. That same year, he appeared in Superbad, a project he co-wrote with Goldberg. In 2008, he co-wrote and starred in the stoner action comedy Pineapple Express and co-wrote the comedy Drillbit Taylor. His subsequent feature films included Zack and Miri Make a Porno, Observe and Report, Funny People, and The Green Hornet, the latter of which he co-wrote, executive produced, and starred in after undergoing a strict weight-loss diet.
In addition to live-action comedies, Rogen established a voice-acting career across numerous animated films, including Shrek the Third, Horton Hears a Who!, The Spiderwick Chronicles, the Kung Fu Panda series, Monsters vs. Aliens, Sausage Party, The Lion King, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, Animal Farm, and Mufasa: The Lion King. He also took on dramatic roles in films such as 50/50, Take This Waltz, Steve Jobs, The Fabelmans, and The Invite.

He co-developed, wrote, directed, and executive produced the AMC series Preacher, and served as an executive producer on Amazon Prime Video's superhero series The Boys, its spin-offs, and Invincible. He starred in the Hulu miniseries Pam & Tommy, earning Primetime Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. Rogen later created, wrote, directed, and starred in the Apple TV+ satirical comedy series The Studio, earning four Primetime Emmy Awards.
