Born on May 21, 1996, Wonders grew up in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Her ancestry includes a father of Chinese descent and a mother of European background, and she is the niece of fashion designer Anna Sui. She completed her early education at Cranbrook Schools near Detroit before attending Harvard University. She graduated magna cum laude with a degree in film studies and production, during which time she also contributed as a writer for The Harvard Lampoon.

Wonders began her journey in the film industry by writing, directing, and starring in the 2009 film A Trivial Exclusion. She later wrote and directed another feature film, Last Migration, released in 2015. Her early acting career included playing Makayla in the 2019 psychological horror feature Daniel Isn't Real and taking on a minor role in Sofia Coppola's 2020 comedy-drama On the Rocks.

In 2021, Wonders achieved a major television role as Riley, an independent high school student in the HBO Max series Generation. That same year, she expanded her work behind the camera by writing, directing, and starring alongside Charles Melton in a short film titled Wake, produced in collaboration with Vogue China. Outside of screen production, she modeled for a 2021 fashion collaboration campaign between Batsheva Hay and Anna Sui.

Wonders joined the ensemble of the satirical slasher film Bodies Bodies Bodies, which premiered at South by Southwest in March 2022 prior to its theatrical release. She subsequently appeared in Neil LaBute's film Out of the Blue alongside Diane Kruger and Hank Azaria. She also secured the lead role in the Apple TV+ series adaptation City on Fire.

In 2025, Wonders played creative executive Quinn Hackett as part of the main cast of the Apple TV+ comedy series The Studio. Her role earned her Best Supporting Actress nominations at both the 2nd Gotham TV Awards and the 5th Astra TV Awards. That same year, she starred opposite Lionel Boyce in the short film The Agency, produced by the creative company PGLang, and was cast as Shirley in a reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
