Hannah Einbinder

Hannah Einbinder is an American stand-up comedian and actress who gained widespread recognition for her role as struggling comedy writer Ava Daniels in the HBO Max comedy-drama series Hacks. Her performance in the show earned her a Primetime Emmy Award and a Critics' Choice Television Award, along with nominations for four Golden Globes. In addition to her television work, she made her primary feature film debut in the comedy Seekers of Infinite Love.

Born on May 21, 1995, Einbinder was raised in a Jewish family in Los Angeles, California. She is the daughter of writer and director Chad Einbinder and comedian Laraine Newman, an original cast member of Saturday Night Live. During her youth, she participated in competitive cheerleading and attended Beverly Hills High School. She went on to study broadcast journalism at Chapman University, where she joined the school's improv team and tried stand-up comedy for the first time opening for Nicole Byer. She ultimately graduated from Chapman with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in television writing and production.

Einbinder began establishing her stand-up career in 2019, performing in the New Faces showcase at the Just for Laughs festival. That year, National Public Radio selected her as one of ten notable comedians to watch, and Vulture recognized her for her absurdist comedic approach. In March 2020, she made her national television stand-up debut on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, becoming the youngest comic to perform a set on the program. She was later listed among Variety's 10 Comics to Watch for 2021.

Her breakout acting role came in 2021 when she was cast alongside Jean Smart and Carl Clemons-Hopkins in Hacks. The inaugural season received 15 Emmy nominations, including acting nods for the main cast. While continuing her acting career, she toured nationally as a comedian in mid-2022 and released her first stand-up special, Hannah Einbinder: Everything Must Go, on Max in June 2024. In September 2025, she won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her work in the fourth season of Hacks.

In addition to Hacks, Einbinder expanded her film work by taking on a starring role in the Mubi and Plan B production Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, directed by Jane Schoenbrun and co-starring Gillian Anderson. She also starred in the 2026 comedy film Seekers of Infinite Love.

Einbinder has frequently used her public platform to address political and social concerns, including environmental issues, the Gaza war, and federal immigration enforcement. She received the HRC Visibility Award in March 2025 and has signed pledges supporting Palestine, including endorsing a boycott of certain media institutions and film industry entities affiliated with Israel.

Einbinder lives in Los Angeles and has ADHD. She is bisexual and was previously in a relationship with comedian Alex Edelman before being linked to journalist Jasper Nathaniel. A devoted Philadelphia Eagles supporter, she cites figures such as Steve Martin, Janeane Garofalo, and Bo Burnham as comedic influences.
