Gillian Anderson

Gillian Leigh Anderson is an American actress and writer. She is best known for her role as FBI Special Agent Dana Scully in the science fiction mystery television series The X-Files, a performance that earned her international fame and a Primetime Emmy Award. Over the course of her career, she has performed extensively across television, film, and theater.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Anderson spent her early childhood in Puerto Rico and London before her family settled in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She became interested in theater during her teenage years, participating in high school productions and community theater. She went on to study acting at The Theatre School at DePaul University in Chicago, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1990.

After starting her professional career on stage in New York, Anderson moved to Los Angeles and made her television breakthrough in 1993 when she was cast in The X-Files. Her portrayal of Dana Scully ran for nine seasons, inspiring two feature films—The X-Files: Fight the Future (1998) and The X-Files: I Want to Believe (2008)—and a revival series from 2016 to 2018. She also became the first woman to write and direct an episode of the series.

Anderson has amassed a varied resume in film and television. Her film credits include Terence Davies's The House of Mirth (2000), The Mighty Celt (2005), The Last King of Scotland (2006), Shadow Dancer (2012), Viceroy's House (2017), and Tron: Ares (2025). On television, she has taken on prominent roles such as Lady Dedlock in Bleak House (2005), Wallis Simpson in Any Human Heart (2010), Miss Havisham in Great Expectations (2011), DSU Stella Gibson in The Fall (2013–2016), Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier in Hannibal (2013–2015), Media in American Gods (2017), Jean Milburn in Sex Education (2019–2023), and Margaret Thatcher in the fourth season of The Crown (2020).

Alongside her screen work, Anderson has maintained an active stage career. Her major theater credits include Absent Friends (1991), A Doll's House (2009), A Streetcar Named Desire (2014, 2016), and All About Eve (2019). For her stage performances, she has won a Theatre World Award and an Evening Standard Theatre Award, alongside receiving three Laurence Olivier Award nominations.

Throughout her career, Anderson has received two Primetime Emmy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, and four Screen Actors Guild Awards. In 2016, she was appointed an honorary Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her services to drama. Beyond acting, she supports various charitable endeavors; she serves as an honorary spokesperson for the Neurofibromatosis Network and co-founded South African Youth Education for Sustainability (SAYes).
