Ayo Edebiri

Funmilayo "Ayo" Edebiri is an American actress, comedian, television writer, and director. She is best known for portraying chef Sydney Adamu in the FX on Hulu drama series The Bear, a breakout performance that earned her widespread critical acclaim, a Primetime Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and multiple other accolades. Beyond television, she has expanded her career into film acting, voiceover work, writing, and stage performance.

Born on October 3, 1995, in Boston, Massachusetts, Edebiri was raised in the neighborhood of Dorchester as an only child in a Pentecostal household. Her mother is Barbadian and her father is from the Edo ethnic group in Nigeria. She developed an interest in comedy during an eighth-grade drama class and subsequently joined an improv group at Boston Latin School. Edebiri later attended New York University, initially intending to study teaching before changing her major to dramatic writing. While in college, she pursued stand-up comedy and interned at the Upright Citizens Brigade.

Edebiri began her professional screen career in 2014 with an appearance on the series Defectives. She performed stand-up on Comedy Central and co-created, co-wrote, and co-starred in the digital series Ayo and Rachel Are Single in 2020. During this period, she co-hosted the pop culture podcast Iconography. She also built a career behind the scenes as a television writer for shows such as The Rundown with Robin Thede, Sunnyside, and Dickinson. In 2020, she joined the writing staff of the animated series Big Mouth and took over voicing the character Missy.

Edebiri achieved major industry recognition starting in 2022 when she landed her starring role on The Bear. In addition to acting in the series, she made her directorial debut with the third-season episode "Napkins," receiving a nomination from the Directors Guild of America. She also contributed as a writer to the comedy series What We Do in the Shadows and the animated show Mulligan, while making guest appearances on series including Abbott Elementary, History of the World, Part II, and Black Mirror.

In film, Edebiri made prominent appearances in the 2023 comedy feature Theater Camp and the teen comedy Bottoms. She went on to star in projects such as the horror feature Opus, the thriller After the Hunt, and the political comedy Ella McCay. Edebiri has also established a prolific career in voice acting, lending her voice to major animated releases including Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, and Inside Out 2.

In addition to her screen work, Edebiri made her Broadway acting debut in a 2026 revival of the play Proof. Her work across writing, directing, and acting has earned her historically significant Emmy nominations, including becoming the youngest Black woman to achieve three acting nominations and the first Black woman nominated for both comedy acting and directing in the same year.
