Fred Armisen

Fereydun Robert "Fred" Armisen is an American actor, comedian, musician, and writer. He is widely recognized for his eleven-year tenure as a cast member on the television sketch series Saturday Night Live, as well as for co-creating and starring in the IFC comedy show Portlandia. Over his multi-decade career, Armisen has built a diverse body of work across television, film, voice acting, and music, including leading the house band on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

Armisen was born on December 4, 1966, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, to a Venezuelan mother and a father of German and Korean ancestry. Raised primarily in Valley Stream, New York, he developed an interest in performing as a child after watching musical acts like Devo and the Clash on television. He enrolled at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan but later left higher education to pursue a career as a professional rock drummer.

In the late 1980s and 1990s, Armisen played in several musical groups, notably playing drums for the Chicago punk rock band Trenchmouth and performing with the Blue Man Group. During periods away from music, his focus shifted toward comedy and television acting. Early comedic projects included mock interviews at music festivals and appearances on late-night talk shows and adult animation programming, which eventually caught the attention of television producers.

Armisen joined the cast of Saturday Night Live as a featured player in 2002 and was promoted to a full cast member two years later. Throughout his eleven seasons on the show, he performed in over eight hundred sketches, developing original characters such as Garth and Stuart alongside high-profile impressions of figures including Barack Obama, Prince, and Steve Jobs. He departed the series in 2013 as one of the longest-serving cast members in the program's history.

Parallel to and following his time on Saturday Night Live, Armisen established several major television projects. Alongside Carrie Brownstein, he formed the comedy duo ThunderAnt and co-created Portlandia, which ran for eight seasons. He also co-created the mockumentary program Documentary Now! and the comedy series Moonbase 8 and Los Espookys. In addition to guest roles on series such as Parks and Recreation, Wednesday, and Our Flag Means Death, Armisen has worked extensively as a film voice actor in projects like The Smurfs, The Lego Ninjago Movie, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Beyond acting, Armisen served as the bandleader and drummer for the 8G Band on Late Night with Seth Meyers from 2014 until 2024. His artistic contributions have earned him two Peabody Awards—one in 2008 as part of the Saturday Night Live ensemble and another in 2011 for Portlandia—along with several Emmy nominations. In 2019, he received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Comedy Album for his special Standup for Drummers. He has continued to contribute to music and television, releasing a sound effects album titled 100 Sound Effects in 2025.
