Farmer was born on 26 May 2002 and raised in Leytonstone, located in East London. He grew up alongside three older brothers, including Harry, who also works as an actor. At eight years old, Farmer began taking weekend training at the Stage One Theatre School. He subsequently studied at the Sylvia Young Theatre School, during which time he was featured in the 2011 music video for the song "Who's Laughing Now" by Jessie J.
His professional performance career started on stage in 2012, when he appeared in the production Rest Upon the Wind, staged at both the Tristan Bates Theatre in London and the Unity Theatre in Liverpool. In 2013, he played the character Toots in the National Theatre's production of Emil and the Detectives. That same year, he entered television with an appearance on the CBBC program The Ministry of Curious Stuff.
From 2014 to 2017, Farmer held a main role as Jake Crossley across two seasons of The Evermoor Chronicles. Following this, he took on a small part in the 2017 television project Ill Behaviour. He made his feature film debut in 2018 with a minor appearance in Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One, and provided voice work for a wolf character in Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle, which was picked up by Netflix. In 2019, he made episodic appearances in the television series Doctors and Treadstone. He returned to theater in 2020 for the play For the Sake of the Argument at the Bridewell Theatre, a project written and directed by his brother Harry.
In 2021, Farmer joined the cast of the Netflix series Wednesday, directed by Tim Burton. He played the gorgon character Ajax Petropolus, a role for which he researched gorgon mythology prior to production. The series debuted in November 2022, with its second season debuting in two parts in late 2025 ahead of a third season renewal. Additionally, Farmer starred in the 2025 action movie LifeHack, directed by Ronan Corrigan, which premiered at the South by Southwest festival and earned Farmer a spot on the longlist for a British Independent Film Award for Breakthrough Performance.
