Joanna Lumley

Dame Joanna Lamond Lumley is a British actress, television presenter, author, former model, producer, and activist. Born on May 1, 1946, she has built a long-standing career across screen and stage. She gained widespread recognition for portraying Patsy Stone in the television comedy series Absolutely Fabulous, a role that earned her two British Academy Television Awards. Her television and film achievements have been celebrated with major accolades, including the BAFTA Fellowship and a National Television Award for Special Recognition.

Lumley was born in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, during the period of British India. Her mother was English, and her father was an officer in the British Indian Army's Gurkha Rifles who served in World War II. After spending her early childhood in tropical environments, Lumley moved to England in 1954 to attend boarding schools, including Mickledene School and Holmhurst St Mary's Convent School. She later completed her studies at the Lucie Clayton Finishing School in London after not being accepted into drama school.

Without formal dramatic training, Lumley began her career as a photographic and house model in the late 1960s. Her initial acting roles began in 1969 with small film appearances, including a role in the James Bond feature On Her Majesty's Secret Service. During the early 1970s, she made television appearances in prominent series such as Coronation Street, Are You Being Served?, Steptoe and Son, and The Protectors, alongside minor film roles in British horror and comedy productions.

Her first major television breakthrough came when she was cast as Purdey in the action series The New Avengers from 1976 to 1977. She subsequently starred in the sci-fi television program Sapphire & Steel as the mysterious character Sapphire. Lumley's career was further boosted in the 1990s through her co-starring role in Absolutely Fabulous. She followed this success with key roles in television shows such as Class Act, Sensitive Skin, Jam & Jerusalem, Finding Alice, and later projects including Amandaland and Wednesday.

Throughout her film career, Lumley appeared in features such as Trail of the Pink Panther, Shirley Valentine, James and the Giant Peach, Ella Enchanted, Corpse Bride, and The Wolf of Wall Street. Her stage work is highlighted by her performance in the revival of La Bête, which led to a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play following its runs in London and on Broadway. In addition to acting, Lumley has established herself as a prominent voice artist and documentary host, fronting numerous international travelogues exploring regions such as the Nile, Greece, Japan, India, and the Trans-Siberian Railway.

Beyond her entertainment career, Lumley is a prominent campaigner for human rights and animal welfare causes. She was a key figure in the Gurkha Justice Campaign, which successfully secured British residency rights for Nepalese Gurkha military veterans who served prior to 1997. She also actively supports organizations dedicated to indigenous rights, Burmese students, and farm animal protection. In recognition of her contributions to drama, entertainment, and charitable work, she was created a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 2022 New Year Honours.
