Rob Reiner

Robert Reiner (March 6, 1947 – December 14, 2025) was an American filmmaker, actor, and political activist. He achieved prominent success across comedy, drama, romance, and documentary genres, earning recognition for his work both in front of and behind the camera. Over his career, Reiner received three Primetime Emmy Awards, a Hugo Award, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the Chaplin Gala Tribute from Film at Lincoln Center. Three of his directed feature films have been inducted into the National Film Registry.

Reiner was born into a Jewish family in the Bronx, New York City, to actors Estelle and Carl Reiner. Raised alongside his siblings Annie and Lucas, his family lived on the Grand Concourse before moving to New Rochelle, New York, and later to Los Angeles. Reiner made his television acting debut at age 14 on the series Manhunt. In the early 1960s, he worked as a trainee and apprentice at the Bucks County Playhouse in Pennsylvania. He attended Beverly Hills High School and studied at the UCLA Film School from 1964 to 1966, though he did not graduate.

In the late 1960s, Reiner performed in bit television roles on shows such as Batman and The Andy Griffith Show, while also writing for The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. He rose to widespread fame during the 1970s playing Michael "Meathead" Stivic on the hit sitcom All in the Family. His performance earned him two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor. During this period, he also co-created the sitcom The Super and co-wrote and starred in the television film More Than Friends.

In 1984, Reiner transitioned into directing feature films with the heavy metal mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap, in which he also played faux-documentarian Marty Di Bergi. He followed this with a series of acclaimed films, including Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally..., Misery, and the military courtroom drama A Few Good Men, which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. In 1987, Reiner co-founded the production company Castle Rock Entertainment, through which he released many of his major projects.

Reiner continued to direct and act in subsequent decades. His directorial works included The American President, Ghosts of Mississippi, The Bucket List, Being Charlie, and Spinal Tap II: The End Continues. As an actor, he appeared in supporting roles in feature films such as Sleepless in Seattle, Bullets Over Broadway, The First Wives Club, and The Wolf of Wall Street. On television, he had a recurring role on New Girl and guest-starred on The Bear, winning a posthumous Primetime Emmy Award.

Outside of entertainment, Reiner was an active progressive political advocate. He chaired the 1998 campaign for California's First 5 early childhood development initiative and served as the commission's chairman until 2006. In 2009, he and his wife, Michele, co-founded the American Foundation for Equal Rights to challenge California's same-sex marriage ban. Reiner also led environmental preservation efforts, including saving California's Ahmanson Ranch, and campaigned extensively for Democratic candidates.

Reiner and his wife Michele died on December 14, 2025, in their Los Angeles home. Throughout his multi-decade career, Reiner maintained an enduring influence across American cinema, television, and civic activism.
