Merrin Dungey

Merrin Melissa Dungey is an American actress born on August 6, 1971. She has established a wide-ranging career across film and television, achieving recognition for her roles in television series such as The King of Queens, Alias, Malcolm in the Middle, Summerland, Conviction, The Resident, and The Fix. She is also recognized for portraying Ursula in Once Upon a Time and starring as Kam in the series Shining Vale.

Raised in Sacramento, California, Dungey is of African-American background. During her youth, she participated in piano, dance, and ballet, and was also an accomplished ice skater. She completed her high school education at Rio Americano High School in Sacramento in 1989. She subsequently attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1993. Her sister, Channing Dungey, has worked in television executive roles, serving as president of ABC Entertainment and CEO of Warner Bros. Television Studios.

Dungey began her acting career with minor appearances in feature films such as Deep Impact and EDtv, along with guest television roles on shows like Martin. Her career gained momentum when she was cast as Kelly Palmer on the CBS comedy series The King of Queens, a recurring character she portrayed from 1999 to 2007, appearing across every season except 2002–03. During this period, she secured the role of Francie Calfo on the drama Alias from 2001 to 2003, later returning for its 2006 series finale. Additionally, she held a recurring role as Kitty Kenarban on the sitcom Malcolm in the Middle, appearing on all three series concurrently at one point in 2001.

Throughout her career, Dungey made guest appearances on numerous television programs, including Seinfeld, Friends, ER, Living Single, Murphy Brown, The West Wing, Babylon 5, and Curb Your Enthusiasm. She performed in two episodes of Grey's Anatomy that served as a backdoor pilot for Private Practice, though the role was later recast for the series. Between 2004 and 2005, she portrayed Susannah in the drama series Summerland. Her subsequent guest work included appearances on series such as Surviving Suburbia, Better Off Ted, Castle, and Hung.

In the 2010s, Dungey portrayed Ellie on Hollywood Heights in 2012 and Alissa Barnes on Betrayal in 2013. In 2014, she secured recurring roles as Ursula on Once Upon a Time and Sharon Jeffords on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, while also acting opposite Pierce Brosnan in the feature film Some Kind of Beautiful. She went on to hold major television roles, playing investigator Maxine Bohen on the legal drama Conviction from 2016 to 2017, joining the cast of the medical drama The Resident as Claire Thorpe in 2017, and portraying C.J. Bernstein on The Fix.

From 2022 to 2023, Dungey starred as series regular Kam on the Starz series Shining Vale, which premiered in March 2022 and earned a second season pick-up in May 2022. In her personal life, Dungey married Matthew Drake in a mariachi-style ceremony in Cancun, Mexico, in May 2007. The couple had two daughters, born in June 2008 and in 2011, before separating in 2018 and divorcing in 2021. In 2023, she announced her engagement to broadcaster Kevin Ryder, and the couple married on December 31, 2023.
