Justin Berfield

Justin Tyler Berfield is an American actor, producer, and writer best known for his television performances as Reese in the Fox family comedy series Malcolm in the Middle and as Ross Malloy in the WB sitcom Unhappily Ever After. Beyond his work in front of the camera, he has also served in executive roles within the media industry, notably as Chief Creative Officer for the production company Virgin Produced.

Berfield was born on February 25, 1986, in Agoura Hills, California, to parents Gail Berfield and Eric "Rick" Berfield, and he was raised alongside a younger brother named Lorne. For his early education, he attended Brookside Elementary School in Oak Park and later went to Agoura High School. At the age of 15, he transitioned to homeschooling to complete his studies.

His career on screen began at age five when he appeared in a television commercial for Folgers coffee. As a child, he subsequently performed in over twenty additional nationally broadcast advertisements in the United States. Berfield made his formal television series debut in 1994 on the short-lived show The Good Life, sharing the screen with Drew Carey. During 1994 and 1995, he also made guest appearances on television programs such as Hardball, The Boys Are Back, and The Mommies.

Berfield secured his first long-term television position in 1995 playing Ross Malloy on Unhappily Ever After, a series in which he ultimately performed across 100 episodes until 1999. In 1995, at nine years old, he was among a group of three thousand child actors who auditioned for the role of young Anakin Skywalker in the feature film Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.

His major career breakthrough occurred in 1999 when creator Linwood Boomer cast him as Reese, the mischievous older sibling to Frankie Muniz's titular character, on the Fox sitcom Malcolm in the Middle. Despite playing the elder brother, Berfield is actually nearly three months younger than Muniz in real life. The show premiered on January 9, 2000, and Berfield went on to appear in all 151 episodes throughout its run, which concluded on May 14, 2006.

Following the conclusion of Malcolm in the Middle, Berfield relocated to Colorado to seek a change of scenery. He chose to focus on staying home with his child and noted that he was not in high demand for new acting roles. Over the next six years, he shifted his focus toward television and film production work. In 2010, the Virgin Group announced Virgin Produced, a production, development, and packaging company where Berfield held the position of Chief Creative Officer. That same year, he made a guest appearance on the television series Sons of Tucson. In February 2025, Berfield shared on Instagram that he would return for a planned reboot of Malcolm in the Middle.

In addition to his entertainment career, Berfield has participated in several charitable endeavors. In 2001, he was chosen as a National Youth Ambassador for Ronald McDonald House Charities, a role he maintained for three years until reaching eighteen years of age. He has also supported St. Jude Children's Research Hospital as well as Virgin Group's philanthropic branch, Virgin Unite. In his personal life, Berfield is Jewish and married Liza Almeida in 2017, with whom he has two children.
