Morgan Freeman

Morgan Freeman is an American actor, producer, and director widely recognized for his six-decade career and distinctive narrating voice. Over his career, he has won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award, while also receiving nominations for both a Tony Award and a Grammy Award. His career achievements have been celebrated with major honors, including a Kennedy Center Honor in 2008, an AFI Life Achievement Award in 2011, the Cecil B. DeMille Award in 2012, and the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award in 2018.

Born in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1937 to a teacher and a barber, Freeman spent much of his youth moving between Mississippi, Indiana, and Chicago. He made his stage debut at nine years old in a school play and won a state drama contest at twelve. After completing high school in 1955, he passed on a Jackson State University drama scholarship to enlist in the United States Air Force as a radar repairman. After concluding his service in 1959, he relocated to Los Angeles to study acting and theater arts at the Pasadena Playhouse and Los Angeles City College.

During the 1960s, Freeman worked as a dancer and theater performer, making his Off-Broadway debut in 1967 and his Broadway debut in 1968. He reached nationwide television audiences in the early 1970s through his regular role on the children's series The Electric Company. He continued building a strong theatrical resume, securing a Tony Award nomination for The Mighty Gents in 1978 and Obie Awards for his performances in productions such as Coriolanus, The Gospel at Colonus, and the play Driving Miss Daisy.

Freeman gained widespread screen recognition in the late 1980s. Following appearances in projects like Brubaker, Eyewitness, and Marie, he achieved a film breakthrough in Street Smart (1987), receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He cemented his status as a major film actor with performances in Glory, Lean on Me, and the 1989 cinematic adaptation of Driving Miss Daisy, the latter earning him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. His prominent 1990s roles included Unforgiven, Se7en, and The Shawshank Redemption, which yielded another Oscar nomination for Best Actor.

In 1993, Freeman directed his first feature film, the South African apartheid drama Bopha!, and three years later co-founded the production company Revelations Entertainment with partner Lori McCreary. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Clint Eastwood's sports drama Million Dollar Baby (2004) and earned a fifth Oscar nomination for Invictus (2009). His major film credits also include portraying Lucius Fox in The Dark Knight trilogy, alongside roles in Deep Impact, The Bucket List, Wanted, Red, Oblivion, Lucy, and the Now You See Me franchise.

Alongside his acting screen roles, Freeman is celebrated for his extensive voiceover work. He has served as narrator for numerous acclaimed documentaries and non-fiction programs, including March of the Penguins, The Long Way Home, Through the Wormhole, The Story of God with Morgan Freeman, Our Universe, and Life on Our Planet.
