LaMonica Garrett

LaMonica Garrett is an American actor and former professional Slamball player. He is widely recognized for his recurring and main roles across several prominent television series, including Deputy Sheriff Cane in Sons of Anarchy, Secret Service agent Mike Ritter in Designated Survivor, and the cosmic entities Mar Novu / The Monitor and the Anti-Monitor in The CW's Arrowverse franchise. His notable work also includes starring roles in the drama series 1883 and Lioness.

Garrett was born in San Francisco, California, on May 23, 1975, and was named by his parents after Oakland Raiders quarterback Daryle Lamonica. He played high school football, continuing his athletic development at Burbank High School after relocating to Los Angeles. Although early setbacks on the school's junior varsity team motivated him to train harder, he subsequently excelled on offense. He later played linebacker at a junior college in Los Angeles before transferring to Central State University in Ohio, where he led the team in tackles. Despite participating in Pro Day workouts for the Detroit Lions and the Los Angeles Rams, he went unselected in the NFL.

Moving back to Los Angeles to pursue a lifelong interest in performance, Garrett funded his acting education by working as a driver for FedEx. At the same time, he joined the professional trampoline-basketball hybrid league Slamball. He became the sport's highest scorer and was named to the All Slamball Team.

Garrett's involvement in Slamball facilitated his initial acting opportunity on an episode of One Tree Hill that featured the sport. After securing talent representation, he made guest appearances on television series such as Hawthorne, CSI: Miami, and NCIS, as well as a role in the feature film Transformers: Dark of the Moon. From 2011 to 2014, he played Deputy Sheriff Cane in 17 episodes of the FX drama series Sons of Anarchy.

In 2016, Garrett secured two major recurring roles on network television. He portrayed Lieutenant TAO Cameron Burk on TNT's The Last Ship and played Secret Service agent Mike Ritter on the ABC political drama Designated Survivor. He remained a mainstay on Designated Survivor for its first two seasons, though financial negotiations prevented him from continuing when the series transitioned to Netflix.

Garrett joined the Arrowverse franchise in 2018 as Mar Novu / The Monitor during the "Elseworlds" crossover event. He was subsequently elevated to a series regular across Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and Batwoman, while also portraying the villainous Anti-Monitor in the 2019–2020 crossover storyline "Crisis on Infinite Earths." His subsequent projects include playing John in the 2019 film Primal, Thomas in the Paramount+ series 1883 from 2021 to 2022, and Tucker in the 2023 Paramount+ series Lioness.
