The daughter of filmmaker Bruce Paltrow and actress Blythe Danner, she initially established herself as a leading lady in mid-budget and period films during the 1990s and early 2000s before transitioning to major blockbusters. Over her career, she has earned several major accolades, including an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Primetime Emmy Award.

Raised in Santa Monica, California, and Manhattan, Paltrow attended the Crossroads School and the Spence School. She later studied art history at the University of California, Santa Barbara, before dropping out to pursue acting full-time. At age 15, she spent a year as an exchange student in Talavera de la Reina, Spain, where she learned to speak Spanish.

Paltrow made her acting debut in the 1989 television film High, directed by her father, and made her professional stage debut in 1990 at the Williamstown Theatre Festival.
