Harry Shum Jr.

Harry Shum Jr. is an American actor and dancer born on April 28, 1982. He is best known for his roles as Mike Chang on the Fox series Glee (2009–2015), Magnus Bane on the Freeform series Shadowhunters (2016–2019), and Dr. Benson Kwan on Grey's Anatomy (2022–2026). Over his career, he received six Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for best ensemble performance, winning for Glee and Everything Everywhere All at Once. He also won The Male TV Star of 2018 at the E! People's Choice Awards.

Shum was born in Limón, Costa Rica, to Chinese immigrant parents, with a mother from Hong Kong and a father from Enping, China. Raised with two older sisters, he moved with his family to San Francisco, California, at age six. He attended Arroyo Grande High School, graduating in 2000. Although initially interested in theater and sports, he joined the high school dance team on a dare and discovered a passion for dance. After attending San Francisco State University for one year, he dropped out to pursue dancing professionally.

Beginning his dance career in Los Angeles at age 18, Shum was hired to tour the UK with singer Kaci. He subsequently appeared as the only male dancer on BET's ComicView, starred in iPod silhouette commercials, and worked as a dance instructor. Shum toured with Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, and Missy Elliott on the 2004 Ladies First tour and danced as a backup performer for Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Simpson, and Mariah Carey. He also appeared in music videos such as Destiny's Child's "Lose My Breath."

Shum turned to acting with appearances in Step Up 2: The Streets (2008) and Step Up 3D (2010). His role as Mike Chang on Glee grew from a minor part in the first season into a series regular by season three. Alongside Glee, Shum performed with and choreographed for the dance group The LXD, acted in projects for Wong Fu Productions, and appeared in films including White Frog (2012) and Revenge of the Green Dragons (2014).

From 2016 to 2019, Shum starred as Magnus Bane on the fantasy television series Shadowhunters. His performance earned him recognition including the Bisexual Representation Award in 2017 and 2018. During this period, he appeared in films such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny (2016) and Crazy Rich Asians (2018), as well as the YouTube series Single by 30 (2016) and the romantic drama All My Life (2020).

In 2021, Shum starred in and executive produced Broadcast Signal Intrusion and appeared in Love Hard. In 2022, he featured in a supporting role in the film Everything Everywhere All at Once and joined the cast of Grey's Anatomy. He has also taken on voiceover and podcast work, including Star Trek: Lower Decks, Echo Park, and Legion of Super-Heroes. Shum married actress and dancer Shelby Rabara in November 2015, and they have a daughter.
