Britney Jean Spears, born December 2, 1981, is an American singer often referred to as the "Princess of Pop." Widely recognized for her influence on early 21st-century pop music and the revival of teen pop, she is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with estimated record sales exceeding 150 million.

Born in McComb, Mississippi, Spears was raised in Kentwood, Louisiana. She began taking dance lessons at age two and participated in gymnastics, church choirs, and talent competitions during her childhood. In 1992, she landed her first professional role as an understudy in the off-Broadway musical Ruthless!, followed by a cast role in the revival of the television series The All-New Mickey Mouse Club. After the show was canceled in 1994, she returned to high school before pursuing a solo recording career.

In 1997, Spears signed with Jive Records after auditioning for label executives. Her debut single, "...Baby One More Time," was released in 1998 and topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. Her 1999 debut album of the same name debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, sold over 10 million copies in its first year, and eventually reached 30 million sales worldwide, making her the best-selling teenage artist of all time.

Spears maintained her success with her second album, Oops!... I Did It Again (2000), which set a record for the highest debut sales by a solo artist at the time. She followed this with her self-titled third album, Britney (2001), starred in the 2002 feature film Crossroads, and released In the Zone (2003) and Blackout (2007). The single "Toxic" from In the Zone earned her a Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Recording.

In 2008, following public scrutiny and a publicized emotional breakdown, Spears was placed under a conservatorship. During this period, she released the albums Circus (2008), Femme Fatale (2011), Britney Jean (2013), and Glory (2016). Hits such as "Womanizer," "3," and "Hold It Against Me" made her the third woman to top the Billboard Hot 100 across three separate decades. Spears paused regular concert touring in 2019 to focus on her legal case, leading to the dissolution of her conservatorship in 2021 after her public testimony.

Spears announced her departure from the music industry in 2024 and sold her music catalogue in 2026 for a reported $200 million. Beyond music, she launched commercial products including her 2005 fragrance Fantasy with Elizabeth Arden, Inc., and released her memoir, The Woman in Me, in 2023. Her accolades include six MTV Video Music Awards, seven Billboard Music Awards, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
