Burn Gorman

Burn Gorman is an American-born English actor whose distinctive features and unnerving intensity have made him one of the most recognisable character actors working in film and television. Born Burn Hugh Gorman on 1 September 1974 in Hollywood, California, he moved to England as a child and grew up largely in the Midlands, later training at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and building a foundation in British theatre before moving into screen work.

Gorman first became widely known to genre audiences as the sardonic medic Owen Harper in the BBC science-fiction series Torchwood (2006–2008). He went on to a memorable run of television roles, including the ruthless Karl Tanner in HBO's Game of Thrones (2013–14), Major Edmund Hewlett in AMC's Turn: Washington's Spies, 'The Marshal' in The Man in the High Castle and the antagonist Adolphus Murtry in Amazon's The Expanse, becoming a favourite for morally slippery and quietly menacing characters.

On film he has worked with some of the industry's leading directors, appearing as Philip Stryver in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises (2012) and as the eccentric scientist Hermann Gottlieb in Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim (2013) and its sequel. His other credits include Crimson Peak, Enola Holmes and a long-running voice-and-performance role as The Curator in Supermassive Games' Dark Pictures Anthology video games.

Admired for the precision and strangeness he brings to supporting parts, Gorman now joins the cast of Alejandro G. Iñárritu's Digger (2026), lending his singular presence to the director's sprawling, star-studded satire.

A musician as well as an actor, Gorman has played in bands and brings a physical, almost theatrical energy to even his darkest roles, a quality that has made him a favourite of casting directors seeking texture and unpredictability.
