Clancy Brown

Clarence James Brown III, born January 5, 1959, is an American actor known for his commanding presence and frequent portrayals of villainous and authoritative figures in film, television, and voice acting. He gained early recognition in movies such as The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension, The Bride, and Highlander. His prominent live-action film work includes playing Captain Byron Hadley in The Shawshank Redemption, Sergeant Charles Zim in Starship Troopers, and later roles in Promising Young Woman and John Wick: Chapter 4.

Brown was raised in Urbana, Ohio, within a family involved in publishing and politics. His mother was a composer, conductor, and concert pianist, while his father managed a family-owned newspaper business and served as a United States congressman. He had an older sister who passed away during childhood. Brown attended St. Albans School in Washington, D.C., where he participated in theater, and went on to graduate from Northwestern University.

He made his mainstream feature debut in the 1983 drama Bad Boys. Over the following decades, Brown accumulated a diverse filmography, appearing in titles like Extreme Prejudice, Shoot to Kill, Blue Steel, and Pet Sematary Two. Notably, he portrayed prison officers in multiple films addressing wrongful imprisonment, including The Shawshank Redemption, The Hurricane, and Last Light. His feature career also encompasses independent films, the thriller reboot A Nightmare on Elm Street, the sci-fi western Cowboys & Aliens, and the dark comedy John Dies at the End.

In television, Brown has taken on major roles across numerous genres. He starred in the science-fiction series Earth 2 and gained acclaim as Brother Justin Crowe in the HBO series Carnivàle. He subsequently played recurring or main roles as Attorney General Jock Jeffcoat in Billions, Kurt Caldwell in Dexter: New Blood, and mobster Sal Maroni in The Penguin. His television career also features guest appearances on shows such as ER, Lost, Star Trek: Enterprise, Sleepy Hollow, The Flash, Daredevil, and The Punisher.

Beyond live-action work, Brown is a prolific voice actor in animation and video games. Since 1996, he has voiced the villain Lex Luthor across numerous DC Comics animated series, films, and video games. He has also played the character of Mr. Krabs on SpongeBob SquarePants since 1999, including in its feature films and live-action television specials. His additional voice credits include Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Invincible, and video game franchises such as Crash Bandicoot, Jak II, and Detroit: Become Human.

Brown married Jeanne Johnson in 1993, and they have two children. He participates in philanthropic efforts, supporting a scholarship fund named after his late sister for students pursuing pediatric healthcare, raising funds for a former co-star's medical needs, and performing in benefit events for his university. In 2012, he was involved in a legal lawsuit alongside other actors challenging the merger of SAG and AFTRA, which was later withdrawn.
