Born on 2 January 1976 in Seville, Andalusia, she was raised in a traditional Catholic family by her housewife mother and her father, a former bullfighter. After attending a performance of Federico García Lorca's play Bernarda Alba's House at age 16, she decided to pursue acting. She studied for two years at the Andalusian Theater Center and completed two years of journalism studies before moving to Madrid to pursue her career. She took her stage surname from her grandmother.
Vega began her television acting career with roles in Spanish series such as Menudo es mi padre, Más que amigos, and Compañeros. She made her feature film debut in 1999 with Zapping, followed by a minor role in I Will Survive. Her mainstream breakthrough arrived that same year when she was cast as Laura in the popular Telecinco comedy series 7 vidas.
Her film career expanded rapidly in the early 2000s with lead and supporting roles in movies such as Sex and Lucia (2001), Mine Alone (2001), The Other Side of the Bed (2002), Carmen (2003), and Theresa: The Body of Christ (2007). She gained international exposure after starring alongside Adam Sandler in the 2004 American feature Spanglish. Her subsequent international film credits include 10 Items or Less (2006) opposite Morgan Freeman, The Spirit (2008), Vallanzasca – The Angels of Evil (2011), and Rambo: Last Blood (2019) alongside Sylvester Stallone. On television, she played the lead role of Catalina Creel in the 2019 miniseries Cradle of Wolves and competed in the third season of MasterChef Celebrity in 2018.
In addition to acting, Vega works as a model signed with 1/One Management in New York City. In May 2011, she succeeded Penélope Cruz as the face of L'Oréal Spain.
Vega expanded her career into writing and directing with her debut feature film Rita (2024), set in 1980s Seville. The film premiered at the 2024 Locarno Film Festival and earned her a nomination for the Goya Award for Best New Director. Another directing project, titled Ana no and based on the novel by Agustín Gómez-Arcos, was reported in development in 2025.
Vega married Orson Salazar in 2002, and the couple has three children: a son born in 2004, a daughter born in 2006, and a son born in 2007.
