Raoul Bova

Raoul Bova is an Italian performer recognized for his work in both European and American cinema and television. Born on August 14, 1971, in Rome, he was raised by a father from Roccella Ionica, Calabria, and a mother from Acerra, Campania. During his youth, Bova was an accomplished swimmer, winning a local championship in the 100-metre backstroke at sixteen. He later completed military service with the Bersaglieri corps at twenty-one and attended the Italian Institute of Physical Education (ISEF). He eventually left his physical education studies to pursue an acting career, training under Beatrice Bracco in Rome as well as with Michael Margotta.

Bova began his acting journey on Italian television before securing his European film breakthrough in the 1993 romantic comedy film Pretty Princess (Piccolo grande amore), playing a watersports instructor. Following this success, he regularly starred as a romantic male lead in numerous Italian feature films throughout the 1990s and early 2000s.

His international career expanded into American cinema starting with the 2002 crime comedy Avenging Angelo. He gained wider visibility among global audiences the following year when he portrayed a romantic interest opposite Diane Lane in the comedy-drama Under the Tuscan Sun (2003). He subsequently co-starred alongside Sanaa Lathan in the 2004 science fiction feature Alien vs. Predator. Bova's other notable American film appearances include the 2010 production The Tourist and the romantic comedy All Roads Lead to Rome, in which he performed opposite Sarah Jessica Parker.

In addition to feature films, Bova has maintained a steady presence on television. From 2006 to 2007, he had a recurring role in the ABC comedy-drama series What About Brian. He later portrayed Pope Sixtus IV in the 2018 British-Italian historical drama series Medici. In 2019, he starred alongside Kate del Castillo in the crime drama series La Reina del Sur, broadcast on Telemundo and Netflix.

Beyond his screen credits, Bova was appointed a Goodwill Ambassador for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in October 2010. In his personal life, Bova married Chiara Giordano in March 2000, and the couple separated in 2013. That same year, he began a relationship with actress Rocío Muñoz Morales after meeting her on the set of the 2012 film Immaturi – Il viaggio. The couple welcomed their first child together in December 2015. Bova is Roman Catholic.
