Mary Elizabeth Winstead

Mary Elizabeth Winstead is an American actress and singer known for her work across studio blockbusters, independent dramas, television series, and horror films. She first gained major screen recognition on the soap opera Passions and built a prominent early reputation in horror films such as Final Destination 3 and Black Christmas. Over her career, she has taken on high-profile roles including Lucy McClane in the Die Hard franchise, Ramona Flowers in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and Hera Syndulla in the Star Wars series Ahsoka.

Born on November 28, 1984, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Winstead is the youngest of five children born to Betty Lou and James Ronald Winstead. At age five, her family relocated to Sandy, Utah, where she attended Peruvian Park Elementary. During her youth, she trained as a dancer through a Joffrey Ballet summer program in Chicago and sang with the International Children's Choir. Although she initially aimed to become a professional ballerina and performed in local ballet productions, she stepped away from dance around age thirteen due to her height and shifted her focus to acting, completing most of her high school education through homeschooling.

Winstead began her professional acting career with a stage appearance in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat before landing guest roles on series such as Touched by an Angel and Promised Land. From 1999 to 2000, she played Jessica Bennett on the soap opera Passions, followed by a regular role in the drama series Wolf Lake. After additional television and film appearances, including Sky High in 2005, she took on leading roles in notable horror features. Her performances in Final Destination 3 and the 2006 remake of Black Christmas established her standing as a scream queen, earning a Scream Award nomination for the latter. That same year, she appeared as part of the ensemble cast of Bobby, which won a Hollywood Film Festival Award.

Her profile expanded significantly with roles in major studio releases. In 2007, she starred in Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof and portrayed John McClane's daughter in Live Free or Die Hard, a role she briefly reprised in 2013's A Good Day to Die Hard. She starred in the 2008 dance film Make It Happen and played Ramona Flowers in the 2010 comic adaptation Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, performing her own stunts and earning a Teen Choice Award nomination. She continued in horror and science-fiction leads with the 2011 prequel film The Thing, playing paleontologist Dr. Kate Lloyd, and the 2012 action film Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

Winstead achieved widespread critical acclaim for her portrayal of an alcoholic seeking sobriety in the 2012 independent drama Smashed, winning the Best Actress award at the Dallas International Film Festival. This success led to a series of roles in independent features, including The Beauty Inside, A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III, A.C.O.D., The Spectacular Now, Alex of Venice, Faults, Swiss Army Man, and 10 Cloverfield Lane. Outside of acting, she formed the music duo Got a Girl with producer Dan the Automator in 2013.

Winstead later expanded her television career with main and recurring roles in series such as The Returned, BrainDead, Mercy Street, and the third season of Fargo. Her subsequent film projects included All About Nina, Gemini Man, and portraying the Huntress in Birds of Prey. She was also cast as Hera Syndulla in the Star Wars series Ahsoka.
