Christensen was raised as one of four siblings in a family of Danish, Swedish, and Italian descent. His mother worked as a speechwriter and his father as a computer programmer and executive. He pursued drama through the Arts York program in high school and later studied at the Actors Studio in New York City. His entry into performance began in childhood after accompanying his sister to an audition, leading to commercial roles.

Director George Lucas selected Christensen from approximately 1,500 applicants to portray the adult Anakin Skywalker.
