Idris Elba

Sir Idrissa Akuna Elba, born on 6 September 1972 in the London Borough of Hackney, is an English actor, DJ, rapper, and producer. He is the only child of Winston Elba, a Sierra Leonean employee at the Ford Dagenham plant, and Eve, a Ghanaian woman. Raised in Hackney and East Ham, Elba shortened his first name to Idris while attending school in Canning Town, where he first became involved in acting. He briefly attended Barking and Dagenham College before leaving in 1988 to join the National Youth Music Theatre, supported by a grant from The Prince's Trust.

Elba's musical endeavors began in 1986 when he assisted with his uncle's wedding DJ business, leading him to form his own DJ company with friends shortly after. During his adolescence, he performed in nightclubs under the DJ nickname Big Driis. To support himself while auditioning for roles, he worked in cold-calling, tyre-fitting, and night shifts at Ford Dagenham. His acting career began with Crimewatch reconstructions, followed by early television roles on projects such as The Boot Street Band, Bramwell, Absolutely Fabulous, The Bill, Family Affairs, Ultraviolet, and Silent Witness. He later relocated to New York City, where he played Achilles in a 2001 stage production of Troilus and Cressida.

Elba achieved widespread recognition in the United States portraying Stringer Bell in the HBO drama series The Wire from 2002 to 2004. He went on to star as DCI John Luther in the BBC One series Luther from 2010 to 2019, earning a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Miniseries or Television Film alongside four Primetime Emmy Award nominations. His work on television also includes a recurring guest role as Charles Miner on the NBC sitcom The Office, an Emmy-nominated guest appearance on The Big C, the Netflix comedy Turn Up Charlie, and a leading role in the Apple TV+ thriller series Hijack.

On film, Elba received critical recognition playing a warlord in the Netflix drama Beasts of No Nation, winning a Screen Actors Guild Award and earning BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations. He also received a Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal of Nelson Mandela in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. His prominent film credits include American Gangster, Obsessed, Prometheus, Pacific Rim, Star Trek Beyond, Molly's Game, and The Harder They Fall. Within major media franchises, he portrayed Heimdall across six Marvel Cinematic Universe films starting with Thor, and played Bloodsport in DC's The Suicide Squad.

Elba has voiced several notable characters in film and media, including Chief Bogo in Zootopia, Shere Khan in The Jungle Book, Fluke in Finding Dory, and Knuckles the Echidna in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. He made his feature directorial debut with Yardie in 2018 and provided his voice and likeness to Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty.
