Quentin Tarantino

Quentin Jerome Tarantino is an American filmmaker, actor, and author. Born on March 27, 1963, he is widely recognized for his distinct cinematic style, characterized by graphic violence, extended dialogue, profanity, and references to popular culture. His work has achieved a cult following alongside significant critical and commercial success, with his films collectively grossing more than $1.9 billion worldwide. Throughout his career, he has received numerous accolades, including two Academy Awards, two BAFTA Awards, and four Golden Globe Awards.

Tarantino was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, to Connie McHugh and Tony Tarantino. Raised primarily by his mother after his parents separated, he moved to the Los Angeles area in 1966. His stepfather, Curtis Zastoupil, frequently accompanied him to film screenings, encouraging his early passion for cinema. At age 14, Tarantino wrote an early screenplay inspired by the movie Smokey and the Bandit. As a teenager, he participated in plays at the Torrance Community Theater before dropping out of high school at age 15.

During the 1980s, Tarantino worked a variety of jobs, including serving as an usher at an adult movie theater and spending five years at Video Archives, a video store in Manhattan Beach, California. He gained a reputation for his extensive film knowledge and co-wrote and directed the uncompleted short film My Best Friend's Birthday in 1987. After producer Lawrence Bender encouraged him to write an unwritten heist script, Tarantino created Reservoir Dogs (1992). The independent crime thriller served as his directorial feature debut, in which he also acted, and became an immediate success.

Tarantino achieved major international prominence with his second feature, Pulp Fiction (1994). The non-linear crime comedy-drama earned the Cannes Film Festival's Palme d'Or and won Tarantino his first Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, shared with Roger Avary. He followed this breakthrough by co-writing and acting in From Dusk till Dawn (1996) and directing Jackie Brown (1997), an adaptation of Elmore Leonard's novel Rum Punch that paid homage to 1970s blaxploitation cinema.

In the 2000s, Tarantino released the martial arts films Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003) and Kill Bill: Volume 2 (2004), which he considers a single, unified film. He then directed the slasher film Death Proof (2007), released alongside Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror under the double-feature title Grindhouse. In 2009, he premiered Inglourious Basterds, an alternate history of World War II that earned him Oscar nominations for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.

Tarantino continued his success with two Westerns: Django Unchained (2012), which became his highest-grossing film and earned him a second Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, and The Hateful Eight (2015). His ninth feature, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019), examined late-1960s Los Angeles; he released a novelization of the film in 2021 and later wrote its standalone sequel, The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth. Tarantino has noted tentative plans for his tenth film to be his final project before retiring from filmmaking.
