Terrence Mann

Terrence Vaughan Mann is an American stage actor and baritone singer, best known for his extensive work in Broadway musicals. Born on July 1, 1951, he achieved prominence by originating and playing leading roles such as Rum Tum Tugger in Cats, Inspector Javert in Les Misérables, the Beast in Beauty and the Beast, Chauvelin in The Scarlet Pimpernel, and King Charlemagne in Pippin. Beyond his theater career, Mann has appeared in the Critters film series, the television show The Dresden Files, and the Netflix series Sense8.

Raised in Ashland, Kentucky, as the eldest of three brothers, Mann grew up in a musical household with a concert pianist mother and a father who sang in a barbershop quartet. His interest in acting crystallized during high school in Largo, Florida, after performing in a student play called In Deadly Earnest. He later attended Jacksonville University, where he earned thirty-five dollars a week performing in the summer outdoor production The Lost Colony. During this time, he met director Joe Layton, who eventually assisted him in securing his first Broadway role. Mann subsequently trained at the North Carolina School of the Arts under mentor Malcolm Morrison.

Mann made his Broadway debut in 1980 as Chester Lyman in Barnum. His major breakthrough came in 1982 when he originated the role of Rum Tum Tugger in Cats. In 1985, he appeared in the film adaptation of A Chorus Line as Larry. Mann earned his first Tony Award nomination in 1987 for his portrayal of Inspector Javert in the original Broadway cast of Les Misérables, a role he later revisited on Broadway in 2003 and in a 2015 Connecticut concert production that he also directed.

In 1994, Mann received a second Tony Award nomination for his performance as the Beast in the Broadway premiere of Beauty and the Beast. He originated Chauvelin in The Scarlet Pimpernel in 1997 and replaced Tom Hewitt as Frank N. Furter in the 2000 revival of The Rocky Horror Show. His screen credits during this era included playing the alien bounty hunter Ug across the first four Critters movies, Earl Boyd on All My Children, and guest spots on Law & Order, 30 Rock, and Gargoyles.

Mann originated the role of Mal Beineke in The Addams Family on Broadway in 2010. His performance as King Charlemagne in the 2013 revival of Pippin brought him a third Tony Award nomination. His subsequent stage credits include Finding Neverland, Tuck Everlasting, Marie, Dancing Still, and a 2025 return to Broadway in The Great Gatsby as Meyer Wolfsheim. Across his career, he has earned an Outer Critics Circle Award and an Emmy Award nomination. He has also served as a distinguished professor at Western Carolina University and artistic director for both the Carolina Arts Festival and the North Carolina Theatre.

Mann married performer Charlotte d'Amboise on January 20, 1996, after meeting her during Cats and sharing the stage in Pippin. The couple has two daughters, Josephine and Shelby, the latter becoming a dancer with the New York City Ballet corps de ballet.
